It's taken a few months, but I have my newest deep dive history of downtown Gainesville, part two of a three-part history. The 1980's were the first steps in revitalization. By focusing on designing for people and investing in the arts we created the sparks that would make downtown a lively city center by the early 2000's. How we funded that and how these decisions made downtown what it is today was what I focused on. Give it a read and let me know what you think: https://lnkd.in/gdCwxspF

Not for or against this idea. Just thinking it through from a #marketdemand perspective. Is #induceddemand the driving theory behind this proposal? If #visitor-driven, how will location relate to where most downtown #hotel rooms are located (ie. towards #UnionSquare)? We’re working on #downtown #masterplans across the #unitedstates right now, so interested to see how this evolves and if it’s a model for other cities. #retailresilience #communitydesign #economicdevelopment #downtownrecovery #sanfrancisco #retail #foodandbeverage

Launching California’s first ever entertainment zone on Front Street is significant and will catalyze more reasons to come downtown,” Robbie Silver, executive director of the Downtown SF Partnership, said in a statement. A global hub, a sister city, and a “big city with a small-town feel,” Chicago’s essence remains unshakable. The 6-time champions city. The ‘85 Bears city. The 2005 World Series Champs city. The city that broke a century-old curse. The Stanley Cup city. 4-time MLS Champs town. The WNBA champions city. Chicago is a city of champions with a winning mentality. How do we sustain that mentality? How do we continue to succeed? We succeed by uniting to focus on what truly matters to our residents and by making Chicago a city people aspire to call home. Whether they come from another city, state, or country, Chicago should continue to be a beacon for those striving to build a better life for themselves and their families. With its abundant fresh water, vibrant air and rail system, remarkable architecture, rich art and culture, and ample green spaces, Chicago’s strengths far outweigh its challenges. Yet, our challenges offer us a unique opportunity to come together and find solutions. How can we do it? By focusing on fixing the fundamentals. Link in comments. 👇

In December 2023, I was invited by Courtney Christensen from Kansas City Public Library to give a keynote to open their 150th anniversary celebrations. In January I learned that ART IN THE LOOP FOUNDATION, the public art program for #KansasCity run by Downtown Council of Kansas City, had been so inspired by the talk that they had chosen #convivencia as the theme for their public art summer with KC STREETCAR AUTHORITY. This is the impact that I hoped to see from my research. In my latest newsletter, Ann Holliday and Edwing Mendez talk about how the capability of #coexistence transformed into more than 20 performances and installations. I find this story of Kansas City so inspiring. The big takeaways from it are: 1. There is no greater tool for communicating values than #publicart. 2. Public authorities have power and should use their power on how public spaces are used as a platform for the arts. 3. The biggest investments in the arts are not done by growing the cultural budget but incorporating the arts into public infrastructure. 4. Even when working on serious subjects, like downturn revitalization, do not forget play and wonder. Read the entire article here: https://lnkd.in/e6P3Y-wc
