Costco Wholesale just announced that members can buy 1-ounce platinum bars, on sale for $1,089.99 on its website alongside its now-famed gold bars and silver coins. The bars are only sold online (cannot be delivered to Louisiana, Nevada or Puerto Rico). Perhaps stupid questions … Is there a reason a #communitybank or #creditunion doesn’t offer #preciousmetals? Why not sell the stuff that goes into a safe deposit box? Analysts at Wells Fargo reported back in April that Costco was selling as much as $200 million worth of gold bars a month. Sure we live in some remarkable times. But there was a time when a prospective home buyer could leaf through a Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog, choose a house and mail in the order. Within a reasonable time, a railroad boxcar would pull into town, carrying a ready-to-assemble house — complete with nails and a 75-page instruction book.
