With the rise of AI and #cloudcomputing, the pressure on #datacentres to manage power and water consumption efficiently has never been higher. But why does sustainable thinking in data centres need to be both broad and deep? While I agree that AI and cloud growth are adding pressure to data centre operations, I question whether simply retrofitting old sites and adjusting cooling systems are enough. We need to rethink the entire infrastructure, from design to implementation, especially with #powerefficiency and cooling efficiency in mind. #AI will keep pushing demand, and if we don’t innovate fast enough, the gap will widen. A fascinating piece from Sean Klimczak, Blackstone’s Global Head of Infrastructure, on AI and data growth. With the explosion in data, there’s an urgent need for physical infrastructure to store, process, and deliver it but the graph below shows the increase in storage needed as we've moved through our digital services journey. A 100x increase in storage in 15 years looks monstrous but in absolute terms its even worse! The fist 5 years 2010-2014 saw only a doubling in storage requirement for the early social media and cloud stages. The next 5 years 2014-2019 sees it triple - but it is still around 10-12 Zettabytes. The last 5 from 2020 -2024/5 will see it increase from 12 to 200 Zettabytes due to AI requirements. Insane! https://lnkd.in/ePCQ5BNt

At Mingtiandi’s 2024 Data Centre Forum, Jing Zhou, senior director of alternatives and strategic transactions at Nuveen, a TIAA company, highlighted the supply and demand imbalance in the data centre sector amid growing AI and cloud adoption. According to Structure Research, AI-driven demand for data centre space is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of as much as 75% over the next five years, compared to just 9% growth in supply over the same period.
