WHO’S WHO IN THE ZOO Six degrees of separation to your reputation It was really interesting over the last couple of years to watch what I would say are 'problem people' in the industry move around. Add in the incredible number of bankruptcies in our sector, and habitual offenders applying for jobs that don't really match either their skillset, the basic expectations of employers or the standards we uphold the industry to. I wrote an article titled “Want a Sterling Reputation in 2024? People talk. Subbies talk. Tradie’s talk”. It discussed the competitive realm of construction in Australia and how to maintain a stellar reputation for success, ability to attract clients and workers, build loyalty and referrals. But a recent scenario with an employee highlighted to me that more education is needed on how closely linked employer reputations are to the reputations of their employees. Knowing ‘Who’s Who in the Zoo’ is crucial for success of both. So, here's a question for you to ponder: If you had a guy working for you that was suffering some mental disability and wasn't showing up for work and left the job, would you employ them at a later stage if it was your decision? To kick off 2024, we’ve been introducing you to several of our newest employees. Last but not least, meet Max Thorpe, Human Resources Generalist for our Work Furniture business! - What are you enjoying about your role so far? - I love interacting with my team. I am all about the people, and I love my daily PPE (personal protective equipment) walks. They allow me to spend time talking to the team, learning about them, and building relationships. I also really enjoy the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) aspect of my role and being able to learn the standards of the manufacturing industry. - Our four company values are Put People First, Do the Right Thing, Do Great Work Together, and Take Ownership and Raise the Bar. What does it mean to you to Take Ownership and Raise the Bar? - To me, taking ownership is another way of taking accountability—being handed an issue or a project and developing it from beginning to end. Raising the bar means not settling—keep innovating or problem solving. I truly feel that the team we have in West Michigan lives up to these standards daily. 👉🏼I recently made an incredibly difficult decision for myself. I’ve been the Daytime Assistant Supervisor for almost 5 years now. Last week, I let that go. And it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions ever since. I had maintained my role through the entirety of Tech school, as well as being pregnant at that. I proved to myself time and time again just how hard I could work and just how much I could accomplish, regardless of the circumstances. I taught myself to never stop pushing and to constantly reach higher. For a while there, I was achieving everything I had wanted. For the last several months, I’ve been battling myself mentally. I’ve been struggling to maintain and offer the same quality of work I once was. Between the changes that have happened both at home and in the workplace, I hadn’t realized just how much of an impact it has all had on me. I finally decided to choose myself. ❤️🩹 I had so many fears about leaving a leadership position. I valued my seat at the table. I didn’t want to lose my ability to advocate for my staff and push for positive change in the workplace. And I worried that, without having a current standing in leadership, I’d be losing future opportunities to obtain a higher standing in leadership someday. Then I realized that I have formed these bonds with my staff that will not fade overnight. As a technician, I am still a leader on the floor. I can still advocate for my staff. And if my voice is no longer heard, then perhaps that is no longer the right table for me to sit. One of my coworkers told me, “A true leader knows when to walk away. If you weren’t a good leader, you would continue holding your position regardless of the quality of work you offer.” I am finally at peace with my decision. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. And I am excited to empower the next Assistant to step into this new opportunity in leadership. My time in leadership is far from over. I will still be learning and growing and teaching myself how to become a better leader every day. In the meantime, it’s time for me to fully invest my attention towards my family and becoming the best LVT I possibly can be. ✊🏼 #leadership #learningandgrowing #veterinarymedicine #nomv #mentalhealthmatters #workingmom #LVT #worklifebalance #healingera

Your summer staff are arriving! Having new team members is exciting, but before you put them to work, ensure they are prepared. And remember... "new workers" are people of any age who have been in a job or role within their workplace for less than 6 months. These individuals are at an increased injury; 3x more likely to be hurt within the first month of their new role. #healthandsafety #training #seasonalwork

International Zoo Consultant / Zoo & Safari Park project consultant / Zoo Director / Independent Zoo Auditor helping with most zoo problems, giving an unbiased report.
The zoo industry has many people trying to get their foot in the door and start their career. This means that finding new staff to replace those that have left is normally fairly easy. To often it is the case that poor managers never think about why staff are leaving. They will deflect the situation of staff leaving by making out that these staff are the problem and even going as far as trying to cause problems for them, I have even seen one safari park ban those that have left from ever entering the park again (a very stupid and immature path to take on the part of the management as very quickly the reputation of the park is tarnished). I once read that one poll taken showed that around 75% of employees leave their jobs because of their managers (Gallup), and that the two primary reasons people leave their jobs are toxic work culture and poor management. Both of these reasons can be fixed if (and only if) the management team want to do something about it. But if a park Director isn’t willing to try to understand why there is a constant stream of skilled staff leaving their park to join other zoos, then how would anyone expect that the management team would care. Let’s be clear here, we are not talking about a few junior keepers moving on to other zoos. This is more about losing senior keepers, those with experience and skills that can only be obtained by working in our industry for a number of years. If you as a zoo Director want your park to step up and make a difference, then stop focusing solely on hiring new talent it makes more sense to hang on to those with the skills and experience in our industry and to do this you should prioritize on understanding WHY your current employees are leaving. Meet the challenge by Promoting a Healthy Culture, Train your managers and equip managers with the skills to lead with empathy and confidence. create workplaces where people want to stay and grow. And if you can’t do this then go out and find someone that can. Because, Retention is as crucial as recruitment. timhusband2005@gmail.com
