Mark Kritzman, State Street Associates Founding Partner, Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management, Will Kinlaw, CFA, head of research for State Street Global Markets, and David Turkington, CFA, head of State Street Associates, discuss their co-occurrence paper which provides a more precise measure of asset diversification. The discussion covers how diversification should be measured, how to overcome weaknesses in correlation as a parameter, the notion of co-occurrence and co-movement, and ultimately how to construct portfolios considering these issues. Using our narrative map, we are able to capture not only what narratives the media is covering, but more importantly, those that are correlated with and driving market returns. This framework showed that at the start of October, US equity market returns were still driven by labor market and US growth news over and above news on the election. However, in addition to US macro news, the evolving narrative on international conflict is now driving markets again for the first time since April, while the Chinese growth narrative is also becoming more important. #STTInsights

Policymakers are pivoting to easing mode. The restrictive #interestrates of the post-#COVID period are reversing nearly everywhere. Importantly, China is engaging on multiple fronts to support demand in an economy still constrained by high debt burdens. It should add up to a great environment for #risk assets, right? Perhaps, but as Michael Metcalfe, head of macro strategy at State Street Global Markets points out on this week’s #STTStreetSignals, there are nuances. As Q4 begins, high expectations and divergent positioning across and #bonds, #equities and #FX make for a less obvious opportunity set. http://ms.spr.ly/6049mUz8f
