Happy #WorldTurtleDay! Did you know REEF surveyors collect data on sea turtles? 🐢 While the main focus of the Volunteer Fish Survey Project is marine fish (and in temperate locations, select invertebrates and algae species), you can also record your sea turtle sightings while snorkeling or diving! Simply mark your sightings the same way that you do for fish. These data are helpful in determining how sea turtle populations are impacted by threats and changes in the ocean. 🌊🤿 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gAyGugcY 📷: Daryl Duda

The UK Great Seagrass Survey is encouraging volunteers to carry out seagrass surveys over this Bank Holiday weekend (although the survey can be undertaken throughout the summer). Seagrasses (also known as eelgrasses) create incredible habitats that not only support thousands of animals, reduce erosive wave energy and oxygenate marine sediments but also - and despite only occupying 0.2% of the sea floor - account for 10% of the ocean's capacity to store carbon. In addition, UN Environment Programme has stated that seagrass captures carbon from the atmosphere up to 35 times as quickly as tropical rainforests. Despite being so important, little is known about the distribution of seagrasses around the UK. In response, the marine habitat restoration charity Seawilding and BSAC - British Sub-Aqua Club have created the Great Seagrass Survey. There's a web-based recording form on their websites, alongside all the information you need for a successful and safe survey. Give it a go! https://lnkd.in/esxk9HJX

Trying to manage not just the operations of Race Rocks but the thousands upon thousands of sea lions that reside within the reserve in the fall is like being a ringleader and a lion tamer blended together. It’s a hilarious balancing act of maintaining order within absolute chaos, with some sea lions having been trained to say yes and no by people to earn a better tip on a tour or for their own sheer entertainment, not considering the consequences of such actions. It’s an ecological reserve so this part of the job is not often understood. Yes, the wildlife has free rain, however, the interior, where the buildings sit, the lighthouse stands and elephant seals lounge and the eco guardian works, the currently lazy and yet at times extremely aggressive sea lions destroy and damage most everything so they must be kept along the borders, the outer rocks of Great Race Rock. The number one reason for this, though, is in fact that there are Native burial cairns. 7 Rings of rocks placed thousands of years ago, ceremoniously, that when sea lions move over them, roll the boulders easily and disrupt the traditions and history to which we do our best to protect. This balancing act gives the Eco guardian a space of maybe 100 metres diameter to move about for months on end while stationed and working as the sea lion tamer. • • #shareccpc #sharecangeo #shotoncanon #racerocksecologicalreserve #ecoguardian #explorevictoria #explorebc #explorecanada #hellobc #bcmag #bbcwildlife #bbcwildlifemagazine #natgeowild #yourshotphotographer #canoncanada #conservation #oceana #oceanwise #oceanwildlife #marinelife #bcferries #ecopcanada #unoceandecade #wwfcanada #rcgs_sgrc #theexplorersclub #conservethewonder #domoreforwildlife #sealion #sunset

Posidonia in the Balearic Islands - useful information for superyacht captains What is Posidonia? Posidonia is a marine plant responsible for creating 80% of the white sands on the Balearic Islands' beaches alongside the shells of foraminifera. 🌊 Climate Change & Posidonia: The sea temperature is crucial for the survival of Posidonia, with a noted 30% decrease in the last 50 years. Posidonia Protection: The Balearic government safeguards Posidonia with regulations, oversight, funding, and conservation efforts. ⚓ ☀️ Yacht Damage: Yachts can damage Posidonia with improper anchoring, but with awareness and correct practices, they can help protect it. Posidonia Surveillance Service: The Balearic Islands offer a Posidonia surveillance service with 18 boats and a VHF channel for anchoring assistance to protect the seagrass. Correct Anchoring: Use the DONIA and POSIDONIA MAPS apps for proper anchoring locations in the Balearics to protect Posidonia. In comparison with Mars' surface, which is 99% mapped, the oceans cover about 71% of our planet, but only a quarter of its floor has been mapped to modern standards. An initiative called Seabed 2030 aims to resolve this problem by creating a complete ocean map by 2030. In recent years, experience-based activities have gained in popularity among charter guests and yacht owners. A win-win situation is created here, since yachts can utilise state-of-the-art navigational equipment to cruise to less explored areas of the ocean, which are also those that need mapping the most. Moreover, these projects have a positive effect on the crew, as they are also passionate about the ocean. Not only does this connect guests and owners to the ocean, but it can also be an experience in itself to assist with these activities and observe the ocean research taking place. As an industry, we can work better to foster links with yacht owners and ocean scientists. Grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) are famous for their incredible threat displays. Compared to normal [A ON THE DIAGRAM], when they feel threatened, grey reef sharks will hunch their backs and depress their pectoral fins down, causing them to swim in a very exaggerated manner [B ON THE DIAGRAM]; spiralling and looping through the water [C ON THE DIAGRAM]. Grey reef sharks perform this “agonistic display” as a type of “visual communication”. As they cannot speak, they use specific body motions as a way to let something (or someone!) know that they are coming too close - like a silent hiss or roar. If you are ever SCUBA diving or snorkelling with sharks and you see one behave in such a way, you are making the shark feel uncomfortable and it is trying to tell you to back off - like a dog growling or a cat arching its back. Ensure you keep a close eye on the shark, take note if you have backed it into a corner (against rocks or coral, or near the shallows), whilst slowly and calmly backing up to increase the distance between you. The shark will note that you have taken the hint. 📸 Grey reef shark - Sylke Rohrlach / WikimediaCommons 📸 Diagram - Myrberg Jr AA (1985). Understanding Shark Behavior. In: Cook E (Ed.) Mooring buoys are essential for safe and efficient maritime operations. They have many applications such as protecting sensitive marine habitats like coral reefs and seagrass beds. Mooring buoys mark zones for public access like fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Made from durable, UV-stabilized polyethylene, they offer high visibility and stability, even in extreme weather. Their environmentally friendly design reduces seabed damage and ensures long-lasting performance. Key Benefits of Using Sealite Mooring Buoys ➡ Durability: Built to withstand harsh marine conditions. ➡ Visibility: Retroreflective bands for easy spotting. ➡ Stability: Secure mooring points prevent vessel drifting. ➡ Design: Available in 5 sizes, they have a unique design where the shackle is to prevent vessel scratching. ➡ Eco-Friendly: Minimizes environmental impact. Choose Sealite mooring buoys for safer, sustainable marine practices! 🚢⚓ https://lnkd.in/e2rVb2K5 #MarineSafety #Sealite #MooringBuoys #Maritime #Sustainability

California Connections Andi Cross shares a personal journey of falling in love with California's underwater world through scuba diving. The article details Andi’s transformation from novice to experienced diver and the importance of marine conservation. The article highlights the contribution of Dr. Sarah Hameed and the Marine Conservation Institute's Blue Parks program, promoting stringent standards for effective MPAs. “Sarah and her team have developed rigorous criteria to rate and grade each MPA, highlighting the distinction between merely establishing an MPA and maintaining its effectiveness. Successful MPAs require comprehensive stakeholder engagement—from government officials to scientists to local communities—and persistent, on-the-ground efforts to adhere to the high standards set by organizations like the Marine Conservation Institute,” Andi explains. The Channel Islands are showcased as a marine conservation success story, demonstrating the role of the Marine Conservation Institute.
