Big Net Zero standard news today! ISO finally announced the kick off of its formal net zero standard development process. The new standard will be applicable to organizations at any level seeking to deliver net zero aligned strategies and targets, including companies, cities and even nation states. The draft standard is based on the ISO Net Zero International Workshop Paper that was published at the end of 2022 and will be developed through ISOs formal international negotiation process. There are many science aligned paths to net zero for organizations and ISO is a globally recognized standard setter for companies around the world. Their contribution to this work will be a significant step forward for building a strong set of standards that can help guide companies through the net zero transition. I am delighted to be contributing to this standard as a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group 207 to ISO and look forward to a robust international negotiation process to deliver a high integrity, ambitious standard that works in the real world. https://lnkd.in/gPuAPTPb

...an early step is the revision of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard... The recent SBTi update appears to be paving the way for carbon removals under the Corporate Net-Zero Standard, but it provides little certainty at this stage. Expanding the scope to refine the approach to neutralisation is a step forward, explicitly acknowledging the role of carbon removals. This adds some transparency - carbon removals can't just be "switched on" in 2050. However, it still lacks the clarity and strong market signal that's needed. The wider topic has caused internal conflict since the April announcement and the subsequent CEO departure, but it does reinforce clear guidance for companies: we must "neutralise unavoidable emissions." As we enter public consultation, the standard itself remains unchanged. Based on current documentation, any revisions are unlikely before 2026. While there is hope for more clarity, is 2026 too late? The IPCC calls for urgent action, and the delay risks continued corporate inaction. When formal guidance lags, it falls to corporate leaders to take ownership, acting with conviction to address their emissions today rather than deferring action.
