🗽 Thank you New York for a fantastic visit last week! 3 key learnings from visiting the Big Apple. 1️⃣ The world is smaller than you think - a quick flight and you can be in a different part of the globe with unique customs and cultures. 2️⃣ Scale - in contrast to the feeling of how small the world is, market size and opportunities are enormous. The sheer amount of people and businesses just around Manhattan was more than I could have imagined. 3️⃣ First-hand experiences - Before my trip, I had built a mental picture of how the services market operates in New York, pricing strategies, and the market size based on the data collected. However, experiencing the market first-hand reshaped my perspective completely and changed my interpretation of the same data. It emphasized again the importance of experiencing things directly and not just relying on data. Keep an eye out! It's hard to believe it's been three months since I joined Nordstrom as a Software Engineer 1. This week, I had a unique opportunity to step out of my usual coding environment and support our stores during the big Anniversary Sale. I was on the front lines, working in order consolidation and directly interacting with the end users of our apps. Hearing their feedback firsthand was incredibly insightful and rewarding. It gave me a whole new perspective on the impact of our work and how we can improve user experiences. For my fellow entry-level software engineers, here are a few takeaways: 1. User Interaction Matters: Always seek feedback from real users. It bridges the gap between development and actual usage. 2. Field Experience is Golden: Stepping into a different role, even temporarily, can provide valuable insights and inspire improvements in your work. 3. Stay Curious: Every interaction is a learning opportunity. Ask questions, listen, and observe. “Does it hurt my career if I disclose I was an ER nurse before becoming a software engineer?” - one of my students asked in a previous cohort of “Impact through Influence”. My response surprised everyone. I turned to the group. I asked the other participants to share their candid opinions. They were all in awe of this person for having the ER experience. They immediately projected strength, resilience, and a feeling of care onto this person. So that was my answer to my student’s question. Disclosing things from our past can be nerve-racking. But it helps people see us in a better light and better stick in their memory. How we show up and how our coworkers perceive us are key ingredients to building influence at work. If you think getting a job at Google is difficult, I can promise you that voluntarily deciding to leave such a world class organization is exponentially harder. Reflecting back on my last 4 years, it has been nothing short of a storybook dream. While making the decision to pivot careers from investment banking during the heart of a pandemic wasn't the ideal starting chapter, being surrounded by inspiring colleagues and the “Googley” culture gave me an immediate sense of belonging. Once the imposter syndrome subsided, each milestone achievement afterwards reminds you of the art of the possible.  Experiencing true work/life balance that allowed me to be mentally present for the births of two of my children. Being promoted. Receiving the CloudClub invitation in the mailbox. Celebrating in the office the day we turned #GCP into a profitable line item for Alphabet shareholders. The list goes on... These are moments I will forever cherish and validation that I have left some form of lasting imprint behind. To the countless Googlers who were part of my journey, thank you for making each day special and fun!  Too many to list out individually, but you know who you are.  🙏🏽 🙏🏽  This was the toughest decision I have made in my professional life. And that is oddly reassuring, because it means that I’ve left for all the right reasons. Not because Google gave me any cause or grounds to consider a change of scenery, but instead to seize the rare opportunities that presented themselves elsewhere. Embracing change is the reality of being at the forefront of rapidly evolving, cutting-edge technology. Therefore, I am thrilled to announce I have joined NVIDIA at perhaps one of the most defining moments of technological innovation. I couldn't be more excited that the NVIDIA leadership team chose me to have a seat on the 🚀.
