Canary Wharf is evolving from a purely office location into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood with broader occupier appeal. Mark Swetman discussed with Andy Hillier at Property Week on the strategic investments needed for its continued relevance and attractiveness. This includes, modernising the existing office spaces to meet #sustainability and technology standards. Green buildings with smart infrastructure attract large-scale businesses committed to corporate social responsibility and offer long-term energy cost savings. Recent investments in green energy plans underscore Canary Wharf's sustainability commitment. Enhancing the mixed-use nature of #CanaryWharf to bring much-needed change. As employers favour central locations near amenities, Canary Wharf must expand its retail, residential, open spaces, and cultural initiatives. Creating a holistic environment where people can work, live, and play will significantly boost the area’s appeal. With strategic #investment and government support, Canary Wharf can maintain its status as a top employer choice, thriving in the evolving commercial real estate landscape. With the publication this week of Carlos Moreno’s latest book on 15-minute cities, do you welcome the focus on changing how we travel to town, or perhaps feel there is maybe a kernel of truth driving the conspiracy theorists 🤔 At The People & Places Partnership Ltd. we find there’s an increasing appetite from place managers to review the options for travelling to town. We get more calls from local authorities and some BIDs for our services that help review different aspects of the journey to town. Whether that’s working with parking managers to apply the People, Places & Parking Process or undertaking access and signage reviews of how people move around and enjoy a town centre, we are consistent in putting stakeholders at the centre of reviewing options. We believe in a pragmatic approach that seeks to give people more options of how they travel to town, as exemplified by our work with the British Parking Association to apply their Park Active approaches with partners like Brighton & Hove City Council. We fall into the ‘side’ welcoming the focus in the new book on increasing travel options, in a way that accounts for local stakeholders’ perspectives and circumstances. Then again, as one wit commented, 15-minute cities have existed for centuries -they are called towns! #citycentre #towncentre #parkingmanagement #activetravel #25minutecities

Even as offices remain stubbornly empty, people have chosen to stay in Chicago, Washington, Los Angeles, etc., because we want to be near other creative and ambitious people, to eat great food and enjoy amazing culture. But a lot of city dwellers did move to smaller cities – places like Nashville, Raleigh, Columbus – and have chosen to stay. What we’re finding is that while they may embrace having a little extra space and slightly lower rent, they miss some of the benefits of greater density. So what’s the solution, both for these transplants and the cities that want to keep them? The answer lies in what I’ll call “urban pockets”. The advantage of public transport done well!

It use to be a street. It's now a place - a great place! George Street in Sydney has transformed into a vibrant, bustling place that feels like a slice of Europe right here in Australia. Walking down George Street on Tuesday night, I couldn't help but feel the European charm of spacious walkways, lively outdoor cafes, and an overall sense of community. The place was heaving! This project is a testament to the positive impact of reallocating space for pedestrians and enhanced public transport. As a visitor to this great city, the success is undeniable. #SydneyLightRail #UrbanRenewal #SustainableCities #PublicTransport #CityPlanning

Connecticut needs a statewide strategic plan to rethink and reinvest in its real estate landscape. Many office spaces remain underutilized as remote and hybrid work models continue to be the norm for many businesses. At the same time, retail properties are facing challenges as consumers increasingly shop online, leaving once-bustling shopping centers struggling to find new purpose. Connecticut is at a generational juncture, and it's crucial to transcend our instinct for localized planning and embrace a holistic approach that considers both regional and statewide requirements. Public private partnerships will be a critical tool in this. While private investment signals market trends, substantial public funding is essential to realize this vision. https://lnkd.in/e8dXAtbr
