Community parks and recreation programs are critical in promoting well-being and fostering a sense of community. As demonstrated in the video, parks provide not just physical space but also emotional and social benefits that enrich communities. Parks help reduce stress, promote physical activity, and foster social connections by providing safe and inclusive environments for relaxation, recreation, and social interaction. Our parks and recreation services are dedicated to creating welcoming spaces where everyone can feel included and thrive. Let's come together to further invest in and advocate for our community parks, fostering wellness and cultivating a true sense of belonging. #ParksMakeLifeBetter #ParksAndRecreation #CommunityWellBeing #SenseOfBelonging #InvestInParksAndPrograms This post draws on insights from the video 'Parks Make Lives Better':

Communities are made up of many parts. Some of which include people, locations, natural resources, knowledge, recreation, and beliefs. Various combinations of these, and other attributes, can drive the success of an overall community, making it greater than the sum of each of its parts on their own. #WamplerDevelopment #BuildingBetterCommunities #1+1>2 #Synergy

Very proud of the Recreation industry (which aquatics falls under) for tackling this ever-growing topic. With opportunities for hands-on work that includes meaningful interactions with others, as well as variety in learning opportunities, recreation roles definitely attract many neurodivergent people. Passionate about their careers as they may be, it doesn’t make their challenges any less difficult. Chances are, you already know someone who is considered neurodivergent—but it can be difficult to tell, as rather gifted neurodivergent individuals figure out ways to hide their “differences” in order to fit in. Take a listen—you may learn how to help a fellow colleague.
It's the last episode of 2023 and we're closing out the year with two AMAZING guests 🎙️ Cort and Christina chat with Kande Jones, the Director of Development for the Mulvane Recreation Commission in Mulvane, KS, and Dave McDaniel III, the Operations Coordinator for the City of Mobile Parks and Recreation Department. Kande and Dave were two of the speakers at the Neurodiversity and Inclusive Workplaces: Insights From Park and Recreation Professionals during our Annual Conference in Dallas. In this episode we recap their session at our Annual Conference, discuss Kande and Dave's perspectives as neurodivergent park and recreation professionals, how to build welcoming spaces, why parks and recreation can be an attractive field, and a LOT more. We started Place Score because it is easy to make assumptions about what the problems are that need to be fixed. Outside of not shifting the dial, it can lead to a massive wastage of resources. Place Score knows that great places are great because that meet and exceed their community’s needs. To plan for great places – whether more liveable neighbourhoods, more loveable parks or more successful mainstreets – we need to know what is or isn’t working, and for whom. If you want a community focused strategy for your place that is based on a data-driven, evidence base – we’d love to work with you! Parks are more than just green spaces; they are the heartbeats of our communities. 🏞️ In Orange County, I've seen firsthand how local park events can strengthen neighborhood bonds, especially for baby boomers and retirees who are adjusting to a new lifestyle. Here's why you should embrace community events in parks: ✅ Social Connection: Attending park events can be a great way for retirees to make new friends and reconnect with neighbors. ✅ Health Benefits: From walking clubs to yoga sessions, park activities promote physical well-being. An active lifestyle is crucial at any age. ✅ Sense of Belonging: Participating in local events can provide a sense of purpose and joy. It makes everyone feel like they belong to something bigger. ✅ Safety and Trust: Knowing your neighbors can enhance community safety. It's comforting to know who's living around you. If you're thinking of downsizing and finding a new home that suits your lifestyle, consider the strength of the local community. A vibrant neighborhood can make all the difference. What park events do you enjoy the most in your community? Share your experiences below!👇 #OrangeCounty #CommunityLiving #Downsizing #RealEstate #NeighborhoodEvents

How do we as outdoor advocates for everything from conservation, recreation use, infrastructure building and maintenance, along with our land managers and recreation managers adopt a user centered, or at least incorporate a user centered approach vs. our continued institutional centered approach? Are we forgoing easy wins in engagement, funding, and expanded experience at the expense of hewing too closely to outdated stories that were created for far fewer users in the outdoors? And when do we need to prioritize the institutions vs. the users for fear of losing priority or not doing enough of any one thing? Seemingly, this is a fundamental problem facing many, many institutions at the moment not just the outdoors.
