I was working with a customer that was deploying a Trace Detection Technology and the upper management wanted to look for both Drugs and Explosives at the same time. This is not a good idea, and I will tell you why. Trace detection systems using Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) have set temperatures for the desorber and drift tube. These temps change depending on what mode you are operating in so you can OPTIMISE detection. There are 3 modes these systems can operate in: a. Explosives' mode: In this mode you do not want a high temp as you can burn off some of the faster time of flight explosives' (i.e. Nitro, etc). Most "Detectable" explosives show up in the negative ion range (TATP positive) and they will lose peak height if the temps are too high. b. Narcotics Mode: This mode will run at a higher temperature vs explosives mode because they are harder to desorb than the explosives. Narcotics will show up in the negative and positive ion modes and will typically have 3-4 times more substances in the menu. c. Dual Mode: This is when you try and run both narcotics and explosives at the same time. When they go into this mode, they typically raise the temps above what they would normally run for explosives. This can translate into weaker peaks for explosives or even no peak. If you are using an IMS detector at a checkpoint you need to decide if your mission is detecting an explosive threat or a narcotics threat. Trying to do both is not a good idea just based on what works best for each mode. The other HUGE problem with trying to look for drugs at a people checkpoint is cross contamination. Drugs are WAY MORE common than explosives' and it is very easy for a person to get contaminated. Just because somebody alarms for drugs at a people checkpoint does not mean they do drugs, nor does it mean they have drugs in their possession. Treating a person like a criminal who alarmed for any drug is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Layers of protection analysis (LOPA) is a method of analyzing the likelihood (frequency) of a harmful outcome event based on an initiating event frequency and on the probability of failure of a series of independent layers of protection capable of preventing the harmful outcome. #LOPA #PSM #HAZOP #Riskanalysis
