Advice for First-Year Law Students from a Personal Injury Attorney 🏛️ Entering law school is like stepping into the court for the first time—exciting, challenging and a bit overwhelming. My advice? Embrace the journey, but remember that the law isn't just about mastering caselaw—it's about understanding people. Stay Curious: The legal landscape is constantly evolving. Stay curious, keep asking questions, and never stop learning. Your professors are valuable resources—don’t hesitate to seek their guidance. Network Early: Building relationships with professors, peers, and practicing attorneys is crucial. These connections will not only support your academic journey but also open doors to future opportunities. Remember, your legal career is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay focused, keep your values at the forefront, and success will follow. Legislative Director & Fiscal Analyst to Texas State Senator Royce West | SEVVIE Award Recipient | Strategist on 8 Statewide Campaigns | Historian
The question below was asked of me by someone I am mentoring today. I am curious what those among you who are lawyers, particularly recent law school grads at large firms, have to say in the comments about this: What impact does the law school you choose to attend have on the types of law firms that will consider you as a potential hire? In Texas as well as in other states, if you have experience other places.

Dear Young Attorneys: 𝗪𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗧/𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘’𝗦 𝗖𝗨𝗣 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗘𝗔. As you graduate from law schools, most of your peers/class fellows shall likely join law firms or courts, but after a period of time you will see only a few in litigation, as it requires a unique dedication and consistency that not everyone possesses. Just like gaining any skill it requires a time, dedication and consistency. In litigation consistency plays a vital role, where regular court appearance shall build your confidence, credibility and legal understanding. At the outset of your career, work-life balance may seem elusive, but enduring the demanding days and nights will ultimately yield rewards. And as you reflect on your journey in the future, you'll feel a sense of pride, knowing that you persevered. Always remember, "Life is a continuous struggle." Note: These are my self generated ideas. You can disagree with me. Regards:) #law #lawyerlife #legaleducation #professionaldevelopment #lawstudent

A few months ago, I posted about the big difference between law firms vs. in house. I focused on where you get depth vs. breadth. In law firms, you go deep on the law and develop niche expertise that is very valuable. In house, you focus on breadth. You need to know a decent amount about 3-4 areas, and a baseline in 8-12 others. But when talking about client exposure, it's flipped. In law firms, you work across many clients and industries. In house, you develop deep relationships and expertise in your one company and industry. But that was a bit of an over-simplification. There are many law firm generalists, and in house specialists. So here's my thinking based on adding another layer. If you like getting exposed to many different clients, you should be in a law firm. Otherwise, in house. If you want to develop legal breadth, you should be in a small environment. If you want depth, a large environment is best for you. Still an oversimplification with lots of counter-examples, I'm sure. But I feel this generally holds, based on my experience. What do you all think? #inhousecounsel #law #career
