Leaders Search for Confidence! As a leader, I have learned that confidence is one of the most important qualities to look for in a team member. Technical skills are essential, but they are not enough. You need to have the confidence to present yourself, to handle problems, and to apply your skills to the work. Confidence is not arrogance or overconfidence. It is the belief in yourself and your abilities. It is the willingness to learn from mistakes and to improve. It is the courage to face challenges and to overcome them. That's why I always suggest that whenever you are going for interviews, or when you are approaching any work or any client, what is more important is the confidence that you have. Confidence will make you stand out from the crowd and will help you achieve your goals. So, how do you build confidence? Here are some tips that have worked for me: - Practice your skills and learn new ones. The more you know, the more confident you will feel. - Seek feedback and act on it. Feedback will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and will help you grow. - Celebrate your achievements and appreciate your efforts. Recognize your progress and reward yourself for your hard work. - Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. They will encourage you and inspire you to do your best. - Challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone. Try new things and take risks. You will discover new opportunities and learn new things. Remember, confidence is not something that you are born with. It is something that you can develop and cultivate. We tend to look at negatives, at what people are missing in their roles, instead of focusing on the greatness or strengths that they have. I remember many years ago, when I had to undergo one of my first performance reviews, everything was around "improving weaknesses" or "areas of opportunities", and maybe a line mentioned something I was good at. I must confess that I felt a bit helpless and even questioned if I should keep working at the company. Then, a few months later, I was at a corporate event, and I happened to sit next to one of the top executives of the company, and all of a sudden we were talking about the performance reviews, and the one word of advice he gave me was “that instead of looking at what I was lacking I should instead focus on my strengths, and that by leveraging on my strengths I could overcome some of my opportunities in a more efficient and effective way”. That message stuck with me for life!!! The author of this article, explains that when we have teams and members have a hard time identifying their strengths, we might want to ask them “What compliments do you tend to dismiss?, since people often downplay what they do most easily. Once you’ve identified their key strengths, ask them: Are you doing work that draws on your strengths? Are we taking on projects that make the most of your strengths? If the answer is no, reassign people to new roles where their strengths will be put to better use..."
