We’re missing the point about consultation when it comes to government strategies. The consultation isn’t simply a step in the process to deliver outcomes. The consultation process itself is one of the most important outcomes of any place-based strategy work. Amy Knightley of New Zealand Story Group spoke at the Place Branding Australia Conference about the power of good consultation. She quoted a Maori elder who stated “The process is more important than the output. If the process is “pono”, then the output is good.” “Pono” is a Maori term which means true, valid, honest, genuine or sincere. In trying to create an environment for those honest, sincere conversations to happen, here are some of the questions I ask locals to help uncover what sets a place apart: 1. Tell me about when you moved here. What were your impresssions? 2. What makes you proud to live here? 3. Who are the people that make this place what it is? 4. What can only happen here? 5. How is this place different to <<insert neighbouring / rival town>>? Locals’ answers to these questions and the conversations that flow from them are at the heart of uncovering what makes a place unique. Are there any questions you'd add?

I am VERY proud to have been nominated for Campaign Agency of The Year - New Business person of the year! Being brutally honest, New Business at Born Social ended 2022 with a few tough losses and a changing team. 2023 felt like time to flip our new Business and marketing strategy. In the spirit of sharing, what did we do to turn things round? 1. We focused way more on our brand (think press, social, events and generally making noise) 2. We adapted our product to what customers were actually telling us they needed ( think solving problems, not selling) 3. We got unapologetic about shouting how good we are (think less polite and a bit more confident) The result was that we ended 2023 tripling our annual New Business win revenue, and signed 40% more new brands than we had the previous year. The agency is growing faster than it ever has, and more importantly we are winning better work. Getting nominated for an award like this is a testament to a bloomin' hard year's graft flipping the strategy entirely. A huge shoutout goes to Hannah Barker stepping up beyond her years, Sarah Rainford for showing how industry leading client services starts in the pitch process, Chris Harvey coming in as the missing piece we knew we needed, and of course Ben Tyson for the ongoing trust, direction, and endless ideas.
