Buckland Timber’s Post

#ThowbackThursday to some spruce glulam pitched curved beams for a project This project was for a swimming pool on the Isle of Wight. In this photo, you can just about see the pool through the glulam frame! Glulam is a popular choice for buildings with pools, particularly public pools or schools. It performs better against the corrosive atmosphere in a pool than other materials. The chemicals and chlorine in the water attack the surface of whatever your frame is made of, and glulam tends to hold up much better than, say, steel against corrosion. #glulam #swimmingpool

Would be interested to understand how cross-grain movement is expressed in beams that taper and also curve. It’s usually straightforward to predict and where and how much movement will occur in timber, even in large engineered timber beams. Add in a tapered curve though and it’s much tougher to predict.
