Adapting to a System Outage: A Night Without Opera PMS This Monday was quite an experience—our hotel underwent a system upgrade, moving to the latest server-based version of Opera PMS. During the process we lost access to our PMS system, and everything had to be done manually. Since the night auditor was off, I took on the responsibility of auditing and closing the night shift to ensure a smooth handover for the system upgrade team. Like many of my colleagues, this was my first time facing a complete system outage, and it was certainly a challenge. We rely so heavily on Opera that we weren't sure how to operate without it. Fortunately, our Rooms Division Manager, Mr. Sreekanth Epuri , was with us throughout the process, preparing and guiding us on how to handle every scenario. With the help of the afternoon shift, we printed and organized all the necessary reports and documents, which made the manual process much easier. At first, I felt overwhelmed, but I kept reminding myself to stay calm and approach the situation slowly. After a couple of hours, I found my rhythm, planned the operations on paper, and even created a sheet to track room statuses and tasks performed. This allowed us to allocate rooms effectively and prepare for a smooth transition once the system came back online. By the morning, the system was restored, and we were able to update everything efficiently based on the manual tracking. I also had the unique opportunity to observe the back-end processes of the system upgrade. It was a great learning experience, reminding me once again of the importance of adaptability and staying calm under pressure. #Hospitality #OperaPMS #SystemUpgrade #LearningExperience #Teamwork
