More plant-based meats that are more plant than “meat,” a rise in the popularity of buckwheat, and noodles for everyone to eat are all on the list. We’ll be sure to check back at the end of next year to see how accurate their predictions were. #food #trends #predictions

With the holiday season officially here more people will be eating large holiday meals over the coming weeks. While napping, or lazing on the couch, are perhaps the most obvious things to do after eating a large meal, new research is further supporting the notion that some light activity like a short walk can really pay dividends. Just two minutes of walking within 60 to 90 minutes of eating substantially improves blood sugar levels, which can also help you feel better. So next time the post meal urge to turn into a couch potato strikes, consider pushing through and going for a short walk instead. #health #exercise #medicine

Using a combination of a continuous glucose monitor, an activity tracker like a smart watch or ring, and an app powered by AI a company called January is advancing our understanding of how different foods impact individuals and creating personalized nutritional recommendations tailored to them. In the U.S. nearly 1 in 10 individuals have diabetes and another 40% of Americans are estimated to be pre-diabetic, so leveraging systems like these to both provide personalized dietary advice and advance a broad understanding that can be used to design new products can have a major impact. #science #innovation #foodasmedicine

The healthiest foods are often wasted at the highest rates, since they happen to be the most perishable. Fruits and vegetables can be tricky and spoil quickly, so we often end up reaching for less healthy packaged food once our produce has ended up in the bin. With the holiday season around the corner, when food of all kinds will abound, it’s helpful to remind oneself of some basic strategies to make the most of your food. #foodwaste #tips #health

Measurement is a prerequisite for almost all improvement initiatives, so it’s no surprise that there are a growing number of startups helping businesses measure the amount of food waste they generate in order to help them improve. Usually using some combination of computer vision, scales, and other sensors these startups help restaurants and other commercial kitchens improve their forecasting, ordering, and other processes by gaining more insight into what type of food and how much of it is being thrown away. While measurement is foundational to improvement, it’s often also challenging, so it’s exciting to see how these new technologies can help companies execute this critical task. #foodwaste #foodtech #innovation
