I work in a male-dominated industry...and here's why I THRIVE in it! Video production is a fascinating world where technology meets creativity, and great storytelling is the key to success. I remember meeting a photographer and creative director who invited me to join his media team for a fashion show. We met at a fundraising party, and he admitted he’d been really drunk that night...but he still remembered me because I was one of the only female videographers he’d ever met! While shooting the fashion show, I noticed the media pit was packed with 20+ photographers and videographers—yet I was one of only 3 women on the team, and the only female filmmaker. I was the only one allowed backstage to film as the models were getting ready. The creative director didn’t want any creeps with cameras taking pictures of half-naked women—that’s the first perk of being female. We often have an innate ability to make others feel comfortable, which is half the battle when filming people who aren’t used to being on camera! When I speak to business owners about their past experiences with filmmakers, many tell me they weren’t satisfied with the results. They felt their visions weren’t fully understood, received videos that missed the mark, and didn’t receive guidance on how to use the content effectively. As a female filmmaker, I take a different approach. I prioritize understanding my clients' needs and creating a collaborative experience where they feel truly seen. Over the last year, I’ve expanded into a media coaching role because I’ve realized how much support entrepreneurs need to navigate the media landscape and see real ROI on their content. Personal branding is PERSONAL. It requires trust, vulnerability, and a space where authentic expression can flourish. These traits aren’t exclusive to women, but I lean into them as strengths. Being one of the few women in a male-dominated industry isn’t a challenge I shy away from—it’s an opportunity to offer something unique. 💭 Let's talk in-perpetuity usage terms... As the requirement for models continues to soar, an increasing number of clients have been requesting in-perpetuity usage of content taken on shoots. Basically, this means brands want to use a models image across any platform, indefinitely... In a world where day to day costs are ever increasing, it can be understandable that brands want to get the most value out of their content however this is becoming more of an issue for the models, who often aren't getting compensated for the long-term use of these images! I'm sure those working in the industry can agree that this is why it matters: ✨ Fair Pay: Models are self-employed, the payment for the use of their likeness should reflect the usage terms of the image. ✨ Conflicting work: In-perpetuity usage can restrict models from working with brands in the future due to conflicts. ✨ Ethical responsibility: Creatives, brands & agencies should be mindful of the contracts being offered to talent and the fairness of a job proposal. But, what can we do about this? ⚡️ Open conversations with clients, fellow agents and models about fair contracts and shoot requirements to ensure the protection of models and fair payment ⚡️ Encourage and support reasonable time frames for content use, respecting models' rights of their image. ⚡️ Promote ethical practices that are beneficial to both client and talent At Gingersnap Models, we want to ensure talent, clients, creatives and anyone that comes across our booking desk are treated fairly and with respect.
