This series of ‘Climate impact on Building performance’ by the team at WAIN MOREHEAD ARCHITECTS Ltd is fascinating. 🌎☁️🌦️🏡 Seems so logical to only design houses that will compliment and adjust to the environment both aesthetically and in performance, particularly with so many microclimates in Ireland - who knew? 🇮🇪 We design clothing for different levels of endurance and conditioning so it seems only fitting that we do the same for dwellings. My mind is always blown by the amount of technical, practical, environmental and design knowledge required by architects to be able to design a house that will perform as intended, become a home that can endure the stress of external factors as well as maintaining equilibrium with the changing internal conditions, energy levels and still deliver on performance. 💫 I’m even more in awe when these houses are cleverly designed to compliment families and their changing needs, are a thing of beauty in a landscape, use sustainable materials and practices, and still have the highest performing quality that can save on energy bills and reduce negative impact on climate with a passive house stamp. ♻️💥 the epitome of balance 🧘 Design for purpose is more important than ever when we consider and focus on creating sustainable solutions and I love seeing more and more people appreciate the mastery behind Architecture and design. No-one I would trust more to design a perfect home that will last, evolve and give back more than it takes. 🌿🌱🌞🌝 10/10 ⭐️

Don't miss the opportunity to learn and contribute to the discussion on the bio-economic drivers and innovation behind the #naturalmaterials use in construction - hemp, straw, miscanthus. What can they be used for and how do we stimulate collaboration between construction and agriculture sector in Scotland? If you still wonder why you should consider natural materials from agri-crops for your next project, here are some facts: - reduction in embodied carbon, especially if sourced locally - improvement of energy efficiency (we can build very airtight buildings with no plastic!), - improved moisture management and indoor air quality (don't forget those clay paints and lime finishes!) - reduction in construction waste and end of life waste management supporting circular economy principles.
Could construction and agriculture sector drive Bioeconomy Strategy in Scotland and allow for more natural and locally sourced materials to be used in housebuilding? Learn about benefits and current challenges of using bio-based materials such as hemp, miscanthus and straw from our exciting panel of speakers: Elliot Payne – Architect focusing in his practice on material culture, holistic design and people. Cypren Edmunds – President of European Strawbuilding Association and Chairperson at Strawbale UK promoting knowledge and expertise in straw building across Europe. Patrick Daly – lecturer and researcher leading KORE Retrofit Circular Reno project seeking to develop agri-crop to bio-based construction material supply chains in Ireland. Concrete is the most used resource in the world after water. It is fundamental to shaping our built environment and plays an essential role in delivering critical infrastructure and building new homes, schools and hospitals. Camargue has worked with the Mineral Products Association to create This is UK Concrete which is championing the proactive steps the UK industry is taking to support the transition to a net zero society. Through our work we have developed, designed and published the first ‘Roadmap to Beyond Net Zero’, setting out a clear path for net negative concrete by 2050, and helping inform a programme of stakeholder engagement targeted at influential industry opinion formers, politicians and policymakers. Congrats to Scott Donachie for a great Decarb LA event late last week. Lots of great panels, presentations and conversations about different ways to decarbonize, from co-generation and solar to circular practices such as geothermal and wastewater energy recovery. A couple of highlights from my vantage point were: - Steve Baule from The Mayor’s Office of LA walked through several strategies that the local government is using to decarbonize LA. - Anthony Brower, FAIA, LEED Fellow from Gensler shared exciting design concepts of how owners are finding creative ways to improve not only the carbon consumption, but also the design and functionality of new buildings by taking different materials into consideration with a buildings location. -Nurit Katz from UCLA highlighted that in the midst of all these green efforts, there is a huge need for asset owners to invest in ways to innovate in maintenance to help keep all these investments producing at max capacity over the long term. - Vicki Worden from the Green Building Initiative shared how water is a new consideration in decarbonization options, but definitely a viable avenue to reducing a building’s environmental footprint. - Eric Law from Urban Machine gave us an exciting overview of how they are transforming the construction industry by reducing wood waste through sustainable wood reclamation. Overall, I thought it was a great event that showed multiple different options to consider along a decarbonization path. If you were there and have any other thoughts, feel free to share them. https://lnkd.in/gYAHkmAg
