It’s always You against You.
"Would you like to pitch at the event?" This question popped up while I was registering for Startup Boston’s Hold the Mic pitch event. I hesitated. Three seconds later, I heard a voice saying, “I’m gonna do it!”
I had no idea how many people would be there or who else would be pitching. I just wanted an opportunity to receive feedback and practice courage.
Two weeks later, I got on a call with Stephanie Roulic: “There will be two of you pitching, and we expect around 100 people to turn out.” As much as I wanted to drag myself right back into my comfort zone, I said, “Yes, I’m in.”
It turns out, I received valuable feedback from Ellen Chisa and Renata Merino, and I’m a little richer in my courage bank.
💡Here are some key takeaways from the event:
🤝Tailor your pitch to the personal background of the person you’re talking to. Research their domain expertise and learn what they care about.
🤝Benchmark against your competitors and bring a unique perspective to the things you do.
🤝For early-stage ventures, it’s important to build a strong advisory board. Ask yourself: what’s in it for them?
