Just finished On Deck Fellowship (ODF20) in San Francisco. 8 days. 90+ participants, majority of whom are looking for a co-founder. Biggest takeaway: It's a good time to be a non-technical co-founder who has an insight and knows how to sell. The majority of the 90+ person cohort at ODF can code. Many are also on their 2nd or 3rd startup. Most people I talked to have learned the harsh lesson: writing more code will not save you. The disciplined entrepreneurs are telling themselves they won't write a line of code (this time around) until they've confirmed that the pain point can sustain a business. My new mantra as I head into my 3rd startup: "If I can't sell someone on the hope that I might solve their problem, it's probably not a problem worth building a solution for." So, if I can't build a waitlist of qualified leads based on nothing more than conversations and maybe a landing page, I don't deserve to do the fun part (actually building something).
