In my latest post, I look at pivotal events in the last five years and the mounding pressure this places on Associations and their Manager. Associations are not always afforded the ability to adjust like many corporations, but for many Associations, the need to wade through these waters of change is now. I created Building Bloc NW to help navigate Associations through overwhelming moments. "A reason, or a season" to help make the shift an Association needs, but missing the bandwidth to drive the change. https://lnkd.in/gPziCgc9

This is me being 'erudite and articulate' (it says so on the blurb) in an interview with Elizabeth Farrelly on the housing crisis. Fun fact: house prices are set by the 98% of existing housing there before the annual 2% new stock gets added. Of course they are. Try and imagine how many homes would have to be built every year to say drop the overall prices by 15% - and then see what the industry, supported by governments and consumers, would do if that were even possible let alone likely. This is probably what the Federal Housing Minister in Australia meant when she said honestly, recently, that if young people thought that the objective of her policies was to reduce home prices they were wrong. What else was the objective of her policy instead, she didn't say. This issue needs to be grasped big time: if housing is produced to make a profit of 22% return on capital employed but not so as to reduce home prices - both the reality of the developer business model and the intention of public policy - who then is to produce enough homes to meet housing need let alone demand for affordable home ownership as clearly the private sector cannot. All I am asking for here is intellectual clarity and a bit of honesty.

New FEANTSA response 🚨 Last month the Council of the European Union released their Conclusions on fostering the lasting legacy of major sporting events 🏆The document attempts to offer a balanced analysis of how to ensure a long-term positive impact of major sporting events, considering the importance of a sustainable and socially and locally integrated approach. The Conclusions, unfortunately, fail to provide a substantial reflection on the significant impact of such events on homelessness and housing, despite the recent and historical mistreatment of people experiencing homelessness in the name of major sporting events. New Towns and exiting times. I’m reminded of how a nation recovering from war reacted to the New Towns Act 1946. Although Stevenage was effectively extended as opposed to born into existence, it’s worth remembering that no matter the times, no matter the scale of ambition and determination, opposition was always there. You can see the locals giving the planning minister a piece of their mind. Yet as the TCPA website notes the “New Towns programme, with its three phases between 1946 and 1970, was the most ambitious town building programme ever undertaken in the United Kingdom. Alongside legislation in Scotland and Northern Ireland, the New Towns Act 1946 led to the delivery of 32 New Towns across the UK. These towns are now home to around 2.8 million people.” Could we aspire to such ambition now? Well, what we know is that there will be opposition and resistance. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, for a healthy democracy there also needs to be a healthy opposition. But the scale of ambition must also match the moment. Enjoy this Pathe clip. And see the new policy statement here: https://lnkd.in/eqsWVWy5. https://lnkd.in/e8VPK6km

That’s all well and good and I agree something needs to be done with The Grand but there are fundamental issues that need fixing first. Scarborough has a massive pothole issue and the council seems to think that filling the holes with gravel will fix the problem. There’s a massive issue with drainage in Falsgrave park causing it to be either a bog or an ice rink. The council won’t grit it in the winter for fear of liability if someone has an accident, in the meantime, residents, especially the older generation fear taking a walk in the winter because they don’t want to fall. The A64 has had “talks” about it being a dual carriage way for years, when will this become a reality? There’s plots of land/warehouse at the back of Morrison’s that would be ideal for rock climbing/ice rink/trampoline centre to encourage residents and visitors all year round. What will be done about the fact there are Poundlands and charity shops but nowhere to encourage locals to shop local building a sustainable local economy? Surely these are issues that should be tackled before injecting millions of, presumably tax payers’ money into a project that will take years to come to fruition or is this a project for you purely to attract voters?
𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫. The choice is between the bold action we need, or more of the same. Others will stand by as our heritage disintegrates. I will rescue it. They’ll accept decline. I’ll reverse it. I have a grand plan for Scarborough. This isn’t a hotel renovation, it’s a revolution. And this isn’t just about one town. It’s an example of the level of my ambition for North Yorkshire. Eyesores transformed at long last. Civic pride restored. The high street brought back to life. 🗳️ Thursday’s vote will determine the future of Scarborough, and our whole county.
