The global cyber incident affecting our lives today is NOT a cyber attack. Many of us rely on subscription services to add a layer of protection to our computers. We agree that they can update and “push” those protections periodically to counter emerging cyber threats. This service mitigates the risk of a cyber attack for all of us. One of the companies, #Crowdstrike, pushed an update last night engineered with an obsure flaw that caused systems to go down. The flaw was immediately fixed and computer services globally are in the process of being restored. This incident does illustrate the fragility of our dependence on computers and the internet for our daily lives. Cyber expert James Bore notes that “real harm would be caused by the outage because systems we’ve come to rely on at critical times are not going to be available…There are going to be deaths because of this. It’s inevitable.’’ He's right. BCS knows that cyber security is a matter of public safety. Just as we recall autos, food, drugs, and products over safety concerns, we need national policy and industries to establish safety standards for the engineering of both software and the connected technologies they interact with. That’s exactly what BCS has done for the connected technologies we use in facilities and infrastructure. A cyber incident can threaten lives or health in a matter of minutes. We need to deliberately and effectively mitigate that risk. Please repost to your network if you agree. E.J. von Schaumburg Fred Gordy Ari R. Sean Plankey Aaron C. The global cyber incident today is another reminder of how our lives can be impacted in a matter of minutes by an obscure software engineering flaw. The connected technologies that use similar software in our buildings, infrastructure, cars, and other devices are also vulnerable. This is not just a security risk - a cyber incident to physical systems can immediately threaten public safety and human health. We must implement mandatory safety programs to mitigate this growing risk. #cyber #cybersafety #cyberdefense #cyberrisk #cyberinsurance #safety #cyberattack #operationaltechnology #smartcontrols #infrastructure #buildingcybersecurity #realestate #cybersecurity #cybertraining #cyberrange #cyberframework #cybercommissioning, #cyberassessment #62443 https://lnkd.in/excEGYjy

🔒🚫🖥️ When the "leaders" in cybersecurity stumble, everyone feels it. 🏆😕 Today's CrowdStrike outage is a reminder that even top-ranked products in the Gartner Magic Quadrant aren't immune to failure. Businesses across Australia were hit hard, from supermarket payment terminals to airport check-ins. The chaos showed just how vulnerable we all are when our trusted security systems fail. 🛫🛑 It’s crucial to look beyond rankings and consider the real-world reliability and resilience of the solutions we depend on. This outage underscores the importance of thorough vetting and backup plans. Your business's continuity might depend on it. 🕵️♂️💻 I would hate to be a #salesperson at CrowdStrike and have to go out on Monday to try and sell the product. 😬 #CrowdStrikeOutage #GartnerMagicQuadrant #Cybersecurity #TechReliability #BusinessContinuity https://lnkd.in/gC472X5P

Wow, what a day! The global IT meltdown today has truly been an eye-opener. Millions of Windows users experienced the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), causing chaos across various sectors. From airlines issuing handwritten tickets to passengers and financial markets in turmoil, to hospitals struggling with system outages—it's clear how much we rely on technology. Personally, I feel both concerned and reflective. It's startling to see how a single glitch can ripple across the globe, affecting essential services and everyday operations. This incident underscores the critical need for robust IT infrastructure and top-notch cybersecurity measures. The fact that major airlines, stock markets, and even healthcare facilities can be brought to a standstill is a wake-up call for all of us involved in the tech industry. What really struck me was the sight of handwritten tickets at airports—something I haven't seen in years. It brought a nostalgic yet sobering reminder of how dependent we've become on digital solutions. While technology brings immense convenience and efficiency, it also introduces vulnerabilities that can have wide-reaching impacts when things go wrong. As we move forward, it's crucial to reassess our systems, invest in better safeguards, and develop contingency plans to handle such disruptions. This event is a stark reminder that in our quest for technological advancement, we must not overlook the importance of resilience and preparedness. What are your thoughts on this massive outage? Is there something I missed? Put it down in the comments so everyone can know. Let's learn from this and work towards a more secure and reliable future. #GlobalITOutage #TechNews #Cybersecurity #StaySafeOnline #ITInfrastructure #WindowsBSOD #TechResilience
