Liam R. takes us on a site survey. Although much of Liam's work is carried out on a computer, in terms of designing etc, he also gets to be on-site to understand the real implications of his designs. #BuildingHeroes #BuildingHeroesIRL #BuildSustainableCareers #NextGenCareers #ConstructionHeroes #buildingthefuture #BuildSustainableCareers

Bit late to be letting everyone know, but I have written a new article in Arc Magazine: The Reluctant Businessman. I talk about running a lighting design business and try to pass on some knowledge that I have learned. I love Lighting Design and I think our industry can bring so much to architecture, far more than we do at the moment. But to be able to do that, we need to all grow and get better at educating people about what lighting design is, and the huge benefits we can bring to projects. Over the years, and thanks in a huge part to Parag Prasad, I have learned to love the exciting journey of running a business and how those skills are completely different from what you actually do in the business. #lightingdesign #lighting #architecture #interiordesign

Random thoughts, week of 10/28/24: 1. The attached photo reminded me of the reason why we test. The details of this existing building were questionable at best, and a lot of people (including myself) were guessing the tops of the lower window would leak with wind-driven water. Well, it didn't. The dynamic testing did eliminate one avenue of intrusion allowing us to continue to what was actually leaking. 2. Recently I have had a few discussions about large-scale, stand-alone mockups. Lately, I have been questioning their effectiveness when the following conditions exist: - The mockups are built and tested months before work on the actual building begins. Mockups are often constructed by different crews, techniques, and equipment than the actual building in an effort to 'just get the mockup done'. - The design team is 'locked in' on their design and specified materials and aren't willing to change anything. - Weather conditions are substantially different between mockup and building construction. - Contractors have bought-out their materials for the project. Any changes would likely result in a change order back to the project. - Most of the mockups I have seen can all be accessed at-grade, from a step ladder, etc. Installing envelope materials and components from a 135' boom lift, swing stage, etc. can be a completely different experience. - Actual leaks or mockup failures are simply accepted and written off by the team with 'we'll remember to do it differently on the real building'. 3. I try not to get political, especially on LinkedIn, but I will be relieved if / when this election cycle is actually over. I certainly don't anticipate it will be over next week. The lack of civility astounds me, and I am trying to remind myself there are people legitimately terrified of the outcome. Stay safe everyone!

when you want to annotate dimensions on a landscape, you need to locate every corner and sometimes midpoints of every landscape element in relation to your boundary, so that the installer has a good reference when placing the details. this version of the script had a duplication issue, where when two or more points share the same axis their dimension lines occur on the same place and give a reading of zero. this issue was later solved by keeping only the longest of the coincident lines, and that one line will pass by all the necessary points and nothing will be left out.
