Earlier this month, the Real Estate Institute of Australia released the Commercial Real Estate Sustainability Report 2023, exploring ways to make properties more environmentally friendly and reach government targets.   Considering the new developments, Real Estate Institute of Australia President Mr Groves noted that better material selection, energy-efficient design, more efficient transport, prefabrication and modular construction, are ways in which the construction industry can reduce the embodied carbon of commercial properties.   NXT TEC. Thrilled to have been asked to attend Aggregate Industries' insightful roundtable last week at RIBA HQ, "Farming the Urban Quarry: Reusing demolition waste to repurpose our city's skylines." A big thanks to Darren Richards for chairing the discussion and to Aggregate Industries UK for hosting! What a pleasure to be in such a lovely venue with such inspirational contributors. The thought-provoking session explored how we can revolutionise design practices within the built environment. We delved into: • Shifting the Paradigm: Why and how we need to move away from traditional, linear design approaches in construction. • Rethinking Demolition: Exploring methods to incentivise the reuse and retention of existing buildings over premature demolition. • Building a Circular Future: Discussing how to design new buildings with circular economy principles in mind, incorporating global best practice. • Industry Action: Identifying steps the industry can take to support this crucial shift. • The Innovation Pipeline: Examining the exciting technological advancements on the horizon that will further enable a circular built environment. This topic is perfectly timed, and I'm so glad to see these important conversations happening. We all know that there’s no such thing as zero carbon steel or cement that is scaleable or cost-effective...yet. We are partnering with the world’s largest concrete and steel manufacturers to identify solutions that are lower carbon to deploy these solutions as a pilot in our new buildings. When you look at our innovation pipeline, Prologis is driving 140 initiatives — 85% of that is focused on reducing embodied carbon. More sustainably built buildings will cost more. But by leveraging our scale, our premise is that we will be able to do it in a more cost-effective way bringing economies of scale. The market should and will differentiate these buildings that have a higher standard and customers will benefit from facilities that are built sustainably.
