Say One Thing, Do Another? It's No Longer an Option in Sustainable Design When you tell me your building is sustainable and groundbreaking, here's what I expect: A dynamic model that defines all system operating parameters and loads across conditions, not an afterthought energy model slapped on after the design was done. Evidence that you’re integrating system efficiency from day one, not locking inefficiencies into the design with static tools like HAP calculations or worse, over-conservative assumptions. Here’s the reality: I conducted a study last year that showed this all-too-common approach adds unnecessary capacity to systems. The result? Higher costs, locked into the design. Lower performance, year after year. More energy wasted, and more money spent. Static models and isolated files are no longer acceptable if you want to lead in sustainability. The gap between your story and your systems must close. Want to deliver on your promise? Show me: A cohesive workflow that links your energy models directly to the building design. Integrated tools and methods that reduce oversizing, optimize performance, and ensure lower operating costs. Sustainable design means walking the talk. Anything else is just greenwashing. #netzero #architecture #realestate #sustainability

Something I've been thinking about a lot for the last few years is how can technology ACTUALLY help us design more sustainable and resilient buildings. Alfonso E Hernandez, AIA LEED AP is Sustainability Director at Gensler (one of the world’s largest architectural firms), where he focuses on decarbonization, resilience, and future-proofing buildings using computational tools like energy modeling and daylight optimization. Listen to the full episode if you want to learn how software is reshaping architecture, why developers now see sustainability as a selling point, and how balancing upfront costs with long-term impacts is key to smarter design.

Architects; “Sustainability is no longer optional... It’s a necessity. Clients, regulators, and communities increasingly demand environmentally responsible design. But does your business model treat sustainability as an integral part of your value proposition, or just a project-by-project consideration? What if you professional known not just for great design but for being at the forefront of sustainability? Could integrating green building practices, energy-efficient design, or regenerative architecture into your core offerings help you stand out and attract a growing market of eco-conscious clients? → Make sustainability central to your business model. → Explore opportunities in green certifications and consulting. → Innovate by integrating environmental impact into every project. The goal isn’t just to keep up with regulations but to lead the charge in creating a more sustainable built environment. How could rethinking your approach to sustainability open new opportunities for your firm?” __________________________________________________ Hi, I'm Daplaah, an Architectural Designer turned User Experience Designer.
