Director of Fable & Verse | Offering marketing & advertising support to small businesses that bring joy
Now we’re well into the swing of the new year, I can't help but stand back & reflect on the incredible journey that unfolded for me & the team at Fable & Verse in 2023. It was a year of tremendous growth, achievement & pushing boundaries 💪 Last year saw not only sustained profitability, but also the expansion of our team as we grew into a dynamic group of 11 talented freelancers! Fable & Verse also secured our first big brand name, which was such a pinch-me moment, showcasing the power of our collective efforts & the trust that our clients have in us ✨ As we charge into 2024, I’m filled with enthusiasm for my personal intentions & business objectives alike. What’s in & what’s out for the year ahead for me? IN: 🌴 Being a digital nomad & running a business remotely 📝 Setting stricter payment terms 👩🏻💻 Upskilling my freelancers 💻 Embracing new AI & automation tech 📈 Doubling revenue 🤝 Fostering a community with great pay, flexible hours, respect & joy OUT: 🔗 Being chained to a desk ⏰ Not having invoices paid on time 💼 Freelancers hustling for work 🏋️ Working harder instead of smarter 🚫 Limiting beliefs 😭 Anyone feeling disconnected or unsupported at work I’d love to hear what’s in & out for you in 2024, drop your thoughts in the comments below 👇 #ThursdayThoughts #NewYearNewGoals

I just wanted to create something of value. I was 16 and deeply driven by curiosity and a relentless desire to innovate. From tinkering with remote-controlled cars to customizing my own computer rig, my thirst for progress and new challenges was insatiable. Be it the art of overclocking, modification, or customization of tech gear — I spent hours in my parent’s basement turning ideas into reality and practising problem-solving. It was in this process that I discovered that Germany displayed a noticeable void in resources catering to this niche. I decided to fill that gap myself. Shortly after, I began documenting my experiments and modifications, sharing detailed guides and tutorials on a website I built from scratch. Little did I know, that this would soon attract both attention and traffic from enthusiasts and industry players alike. Soon I found myself fielding offers from companies eager to advertise on my platform. With a makeshift office in my bedroom and a burgeoning network of freelancers and contributors, I began navigating the complexities of running a business. Over time, my one-man operation then blossomed into a larger business. I even hired freelancers to add their stories to my blog. Why am I telling you this story? As a motivational push. If you have a passion, find yourself spotting an opportunity, and have the drive to follow your idea through, then you can make your vision become a reality. Fun fact: My first ad customer was in fact Listan, the company I’m shaping with my team today. #throwback #sweetsixteen #companybeginnings

Loves causing Digital Evolution | Empathetic Leader | Healthcare Expert | Mentor | Coach | CTO | CDO | CISO
Last week Alex Ischenko and myself moderated a CTO Round-Table event focussing on Effectively Integrating Freelancers and Consultants into Product-Driven, Cross-Functional Teams: Challenges and Solutions for Success hosted at ablefy and organised by Phil Heath of Third Republic. Over 20 CTOs, VPs, Directors and Engineering leaders joined us for a great discussion. Some were in favour of using freelancers, others against. Everyone contributed to the discussions which was great. But what did we learn? What's my advice if you're using freelancers, contractors, external vendors to work with or for your teams? 1. Integrate them as tightly as possible - give them access to tools and data that they need, give them onboarding information. Teach them what they need to know about you and your project / product and teams. 2. Treat them equally with employees - this may mean creative accounting. Buy them a t-shirt if you're getting some for your teams. Pay for a meal if you do it for your teams. Some of this you might need to do in the form of "billing an extra hour". But the way it will make these individuals, who's efforts you rely on feel, is so much worth it. 3. Want to bind a particular freelancer to your startup long term - offer them VSOP (virtual stock options). The contracts for VSOP can be arranged completely separate from employment contracts and have no immediate tax implications for either party. This can be a great incentive if you want to keep someone but they don't want to switch to permanent employment. Have more questions, or are struggling to integrate external or remote teams successfully? Reach out to me and I'm happy to help! #remotework #freelancer #contracting #futureofwork #teamwork #teamtopologies #organisationdesign
