A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of witnessing and photographing a tradition at Westminster School called "The Lawn Ceremony". Essentially, the 12th graders invite the 11th graders to join them in a special area of campus exclusive to the graduating class. It's an honor to be personally led onto the lawn. It's part of the school's culture. And, often, it's an emotional moment for all. In the first five years of photographing this annual event, I didn't understand the reason for tears. They looked like happy tears, but I wasn't sure. This year, the head of the school, Elaine White, spoke succinctly at one of the closing ceremonies about the importance of community. And then it all made sense. From the first day of school to the last, schools such as Westminster have a broader mission than just education. They want to give their students a taste of what's possible in the "real world" – that connection, cooperation, collaboration, and community are all achievable. The happy tears, I think, are evidence that despite the trials and tribulations of the past three years, they too can experience that same sense of togetherness as their older peers. It's perhaps also a reminder that they have just one more year to go before graduating from high school. Thirteen Broward County Public Schools high schools are among the top public high schools in the nation, according to the annual rankings released this week by U.S. News & World Report, with Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy, Pompano Beach High School and McFatter Technical High School in the top 2.5% of all ranked schools in the country. In addition, Atlantic Technical High School and Cypress Bay High School ranked in the top 5%. These five schools are also recognized for being among the top 5% of high schools in Florida, with Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy ranking #2 in the state. Read more at bit.ly/3JDlfE4

The Muddy Best Schools Awards 2024 have launched! I'm thrilled to let you know that The Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards, in partnership with Debrett's Education, have just opened and are ready for entries up until 21 March 2024. I started the Best Schools Awards in 2022, because I felt like there was a need for an Awards that focused on on modern, innovative, forward-thinking education rather than just pure academics or schools trading on their name or past glories - values we share with Debrett's Education and our incredible panel of judges: Patrick Derham OBE, Roz Savage MBE, Emma Goldsmith, Guy Schady-Beckett, Stefan Anderson, Prof Dr Ger Graus OBE, Lucy Elphinstone, Kieran McLaughlin, Tove Okunniwa MBE, Toby Garbett OLY, Mark Semmence, Dr Jess Wade, William Phelps, Sophie Green and Sioban O'Connor. I also wanted to give a strong, impartial helping hand for families trying to see past glossy school marketing brochures to choose the school where their children would be happy and thrive. Our 13 categories have been chosen to really test a school's brilliance and innovation in areas that parents (like me) care about including pastoral care, passionate sports provision, creative learning, and a dynamic arts programme.
