The #livingwage rate has risen in Manchester to £12/hour helping low paid workers cover the cost of living. Signing up to join the Living Wage movement protects people who work for you (including third party contractors) from rising prices and leads to a more motivated and engaged workforce. The real Living Wage is different to the Government’s National Living Wage. It is for 18 years+ and calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK, and employers choose to pay the Real Living Wage on a voluntary basis. Companies that commit to this can become an accredited Real Living Wage employer.

I could not agree more. Employers must realize that offering low salaries to qualified individuals only costs them more in the long run. High turnover, loss of great talent, low morale, lack of motivated staff, and so on. High salaries are not the only characteristic that attracts talent, but they play an integral role.

The new rates for National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage were announce in the chancellors autumn statement last week. The new rates will come into affect from 1 April and will be: 21 and over: £11.44 (an increase of £1.02). 18-20 year olds: £8.60 (an increase of £1.11). 16-17 year olds and apprentices: £6.40 (an increase of £1.12). These increases are the most significant increase to the minimum wage to date. With this increase there is also an age threshold drop for the National Living Wage, dropping from age 23 and over, to age 21 and over. Recent polling of those earning below the real Living Wage found that 60% have visited a food bank in the past year and 39% regularly skipping meals for financial reasons. The real Living Wage remains the only wage rates independently calculated based on what people need to live on.
