South Africa has faced two major cyber security breaches this year and has been the victim of ongoing cyber abuse over a significant period, which cost millions of Rands in losses. Over the past ten years, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and the Department of Public Works lost over R400 million to cyber attacks. Further, the breach of the National Health Laboratory Services and the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission this year has exposed South Africa's weaknesses regarding cyber security and the growing global tech skills shortage when addressing these risks. The end of the year is fast approaching, and with it, the festive season and general anticipation for that hard-earned vacation that many South Africans work so hard for during the year. While this is a time of good cheer and increased shopping activity to prepare for the December break, it is also a busy time for scammers who want to take advantage of this activity. Many South Africans have recently contacted a popular Johannesburg radio station reporting increased attempts at banking fraud, with scammers sometimes becoming increasingly aggressive and convincing. The SAFPS (Southern African Fraud Prevention Service) warns that this risk is something that every South African needs to be wary of. Strong female leadership will have a positive impact on the South African narrative (August 2024) Despite the fact that South Africa is going through a significant political transition, our democracy remains a shining beacon of hope on a continent where a democratic process is desperately needed in many countries. This cannot have been achieved without the sacrifices made by strong political leaders who have fought hard to build our democracy.
