🥑 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿? 🥑 What does it take to be a future-ready leader - especially with so much change, uncertainty, and disruption in our lives? Research by Macquarie University during the pandemic sheds some light on what the best leaders do - and continue to do - in leading themselves and their teams for future success. Do you know what it takes to be a future-ready leader? Last week, I was working with the leaders of an organisation at their leadership forum. These are senior leaders of an organisation that's responsible for protecting much of our critical infrastructure, and we were exploring some ideas about leadership for the future. If I asked you what leaders need to be effective in the future, I'm sure you could come up with some ideas. One of the simplest and yet most powerful ideas is the concept of an Avocado Leader. This came from some research done by Macquarie University early in the pandemic. In mid-2020, in the middle of the crisis, when we had no idea how long it would last or how bad it would be, Macquarie examined leaders all around Australia to identify what the best leaders were doing. They came up with this concept, which I love - wish I'd thought of it myself - the Avocado Leader. In their report ‘COVID-19: Crisis or Catalyst?’, the researchers coined this phrase to describe a new leadership style for successfully navigating through crisis. They said the best leaders are like avocados: 👨💼 They have a hard inner core which is looking after the organisation - making sure we're still meeting organisational goals, KPIs, doing what our customers require, and so on. 💗 But they also have a soft outer layer that's looking after people - things empathy, trust, building judgement. These are especially important during massive change, uncertainty, and even a crisis. I'm sure you'd agree the best leaders have always been Avocado Leaders. They treat their people as people first, but know their performance still matters. They plan from the head – to achieve the team and organisational objectives – but lead from the heart – to bring people along on the journey.
