The Kendeda Building: Part 3 - Take the tour! I hope you have enjoyed our three part series on this incredible building. The value of these cutting edge projects to me is more than showcasing best practices and offering lesson's learned. They are the shining beacon of what success looks like when the whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts. We are in the middle of transforming our built environment to be regenerative. Most of the buildings we are building and renovating now are both better than where we have come from and not as good as where we want to go. We have to embrace that messiness as we continue the transformation and keep perspective that the mid-way efforts don't gain all the benefits of the more mature approach. Where we are now: [fossil fueled, energy intensive, low performing buildings] -> -> -> (the messy middle we are in now) -> -> -> [renewably energized, efficient, regenerative buildings] The Kendeda Building to me embodies this more mature approach to regenerative building practices. The ethos of regeneration pervades the project, it is palpable in the experience of the space, and as you peel back the layers of the project you find more and more ways in which it was a humble steward of its local environment. This video tour is extremely well produced and I encourage you to watch it all the way through to the great bloopers at the end! https://buff.ly/4e2mE5e

Here is the recording for 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 PhD completion seminar! 🏢 Four new innovative apartment projects in Melbourne, Australia, have been described as 'resilient communities'... but does the rhetoric match the lived realities? and what does community resilience mean in an apartment context? Watch to find out, but here are the main findings from the mixed-methods research: — high community resilience exists in the four buildings ✔️ — suitable pre-occupancy processes foster community resilience ✔️ — post-occupancy processes foster AND undermine community resilience 🤔 — shared spaces foster AND undermine community resilience 🤔 — there are ongoing design, management, and lifestyle vulnerabilities that may undermine the high community resilience across the four buildings in the future — if we want more 'life between apartments' and community resilience, then further innovation, support, experimentation AND project feedback is needed from the many actors in the housing system to show what works, what doesn't, and how we can shift apartment living to suit more people 💭 🚀🤝🌱 The youtube video is timestamped so you can view these findings and more about the research in further detail. Thank you to Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning Melbourne Centre for Cities Life Course Centre Informal Urbanism Research Hub @UniMelb City of Melbourne and Resilient Melbourne for establishing and/or helping with data collection and participant remuneration.

And may I say, what a fabulous building it is to work in. The sense of light and space is really significant, creating an excellent working environment.
We're honoured that Thames Christian School & Battersea Chapel has won a RIBA London Award for 2024. Our many thanks go to wonderful clients at Thames Christian School and Battersea Chapel as well as Taylor Wimpey plc and Wandsworth Borough Council, dedicated collaborators and a fantastic team that made it all possible! The project, sited next to Clapham Junction railway station, brings together the Battersea Chapel Baptist Church and the independent co-educational secondary Thames Christian School. The 6-storey, 5,175m2 building provides the church with a new community hall and sanctuary, and allows the school to expand to 400 pupils, of which nearly half are on the SEN register. The RIBA London jury said that "The architecture of the new building offers stability and permanence in a physical and psychological context that surely welcomes its assured, confident presence and robust materiality. It exudes a rare civic presence, a calm determination and resolve. Anchoring the energy of the neighbourhood, it is marked by finely composed plans and elevations which have resulted in a powerful, sensitively crafted new building." They concluded that "It is the antithesis of an architectural culture which is an extension of the entertainment industry. This is an architecture that explores civic character, exemplified by decorum, quietude and presence, achieved through skill, discipline and material."
