It's naive to hire someone and assume their previous success will be replicated. Someone's previous accomplishments may well be 100% down to them, but there's loads of other factors to consider: - The environment they were in (structure, culture) - The resources they had available (tools, systems etc) - Timing - A bit of luck - The people around them (leveraging others) This came up recently, someone I knew hired a sales rep and because they'd previously closed 20 of the Fortune 100, assumed they'd do it again with ease. It's important to dive into the context behind accomplishments, and this isn't about diminishing the scale of what someone previously achieved however it's about being a realist that all of the factors I listed (+ more) lead to those outcomes, as well as individual brilliance.

We're always on the lookout for individuals who bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. Sales Recruitment in a nutshell: Hiring Manager "We want top producers, p club winners, always hitting quota" Recruiter "Ok, sounds good" *submits top producer that is passively looking* Hiring Manager - "Why is this person targeting such a high compensation? If he is making that much now, why would they want to leave?" *submits someone with a long consistent track record* Hiring Manager - "They have only worked for one company in their career, were looking for someone with a bit more diversity in their background" *sends someone that has recently left an org* Hiring Manager - "Why are they no longer with the company? If it was a layoff I am assuming they weren't good enough to make the cut." *sends someone that is out of work and has been selective with their job search* "Why have they been out of work for so long, do they not want to sell anymore?" *Sends someone that took an sub-par opportunity quickly after a layoff to avoids gaps in their resume* "Why do they want to leave already? Can they not able to adapt to a difficult environment?" *sends someone from a direct competitor* "We hate people from X, hard pass." *sends someone from the same college they went to* "They went to X?? I want to talk to them immediately." Sometimes the best solution is the simplest 😂

Hiring - how we can be better. One of the things we are addressing at Alpine Testing Solutions, Inc. is our hiring process. In particular, how quickly we provide feedback, and how quickly we get offers out. Being a candidate can be so frustrating. Waiting on hiring teams to let you know if you’re moving forward in the process or not can be agonizing and frustrating. Slow (weeks and months), and sometimes NO communication is a practice I have seen far too often, and frankly, is unacceptable. Candidates want a yes or no as quick as possible, so they can move on. And when we have a great candidate, we need to get an offer out to them asap. So I am working with our HR department and hiring managers to ensure we at Alpine make sure we are empathetic to our candidates needs and emotions, and provide as best a hiring process as possible. - when it’s a no, we let them know - ghosting candidates is not cool! - get the process done asap - great candidates get an offer quick As leaders we must do better for those seeking to work with us.
