One of everybody's favorite parts from this past year has been this ramjet engine designed by our Applications Development Engineer Jay Blake. Ramjets are air-breathing jet engines designed to achieve supersonic speeds. This design was inspired by the J-58 turbojet used on the SR-71 Blackbird, which still holds the record for the fastest supersonic, air-breathing manned aircraft. That record was set in 1976 and has yet to be broken. There is growing interest in #ramjet engines (as well as their hypersonic cousin, the #scramjet) from the #aerospace and #defense industries. Additive manufacturing is a key technology for developing these applications as you can print precise geometries that consolidate dozens-to-hundreds of parts into a single component.

A sentiment I've been hearing a lot lately is the notion that we need to be pushing more money to scale the primes, rather than really considering our small business base to be a viable solution to real national security problems. But, Why? Where does this notion come from? We have NEVER won a major conflict with a consolidated industrial base. In the 1950's there were over 50 major defense prime contractors, and countless support partners. Anyone with the right tech was fair game. The competition and innovation is what gave us our edge, and the culture of the economic industrial base and it's connection to defense is what drove that willingness to repurpose factories for the good of national defense. During COVID, we came together. We had those offers from small and big businesses alike. In many cases, we chose not to take them in favor of waiting months for foreign aid and supplies (my husband can attest to many angry meetings and defeated tears). I have a hypotheses on a couple of contributing factors - but I invite the thoughts and enlightenment of the collective mind: 1. It's Comfortable: Those of us in government have only every lived in the consolidated world. We've grown and succeeded there. It's what we know. 2. The Infrastructure isn't there: Our processes and organizational infrastructure are built around a "build from within" paradigm that assumes defense spending will get there first. The innovation ecosystem is meant to be a fix, but such fixes were only designed to capture the 10 to 20% outliers. IF we're saying MOST of the innovation is coming from without in key technology areas, then they won't and can't be enough, and something bigger has to change. The innovation and tenacity of the U.S. economy is a key factor in what makes our nation great. Firehawk Aerospace is one of the rising stars in the defense industry. They're talented, fast paced, forward leaning, humble enough to listen, and persistent enough to deliver. They say we're preparing for for a great power competition? This. is. how. we. win.
Portfolio Company, Firehawk Aerospace, is on a mission to improve America’s defense and aerospace capabilities by producing hybrid rocket engines that are safer, lower cost, and deliver a higher standard of performance. Firehawk uses patent-protected additive manufacturing technology to produce 3D-printed fuel grains customizable to any size and thrust profile for precise mission tailoring. Exciting things are happening in the field of additive manufacturing in aerospace.
📢 GKN Aerospace is proud to announce our collaboration with Northrop Grumman on the SMART Demo rocket motor. Our contribution hails from our cutting-edge Global Technology Centre in Fort Worth, Texas. We utilize the large-scale laser metal deposition with wire (LMD-w) process to create components that are lighter, stronger, and smarter. This break-trough technology is optimizing product weight, efficiently using high-cost alloys, and reducing lead times. https://lnkd.in/ejSErDVF #gknaerospace #northropgrumman #additivemanufacturing #lasermetaldeposition #smartdemo #rockettechnology #manufacturingrevolution #3dprinting #industry4_0 #aerospaceengineering #collaborationcounts
