Here are 5 key lessons we can all learn: 1. Home is Where the Hearth Isn't: Focus on creating a fire-resistant zone around your home. This means clearing flammable materials like leaves, branches, and dead plants within 30 feet of your house. Consider fire-resistant landscaping options and maintain a clean roof free of debris. 2. Be a Good Neighbor: Talk to your neighbors about creating a wildfire preparedness plan together. This can include sharing resources, creating defensible space buffers between properties, and having a communication plan in case of an evacuation. 3. Know Your Resources: The Colorado Springs Fire Department offers a wealth of information on their website, including free home inspections and mitigation tips. Don't hesitate to reach out and learn more! [Refer to local department website or resources here] 4. Be Firewise: Stay informed about local fire restrictions and weather conditions. Be mindful of activities that could spark a fire, like using fireworks or improperly disposing of cigarettes. 5. This includes having a designated meeting place and an emergency kit stocked with essentials like food, water, and medications. The Austin metro area ranks 5th in the country for wildfire risk.* District 10 is particularly worried about wildfire because of vegetation, density, and single entry/exit neighborhoods. Last week was “Wildfire Preparedness Week” Great to hear of the accomplishments for a pro active approach to the unprecedented global wildfire crisis. Yes there are ways to address this issue, however the longer communities, businesses and administrations procrastinate on making decisions to implement said projects could prove to be detrimental. Fire season (now fire years) have already begun in many states outside of California. And there has been some incidents in the state. Will we have a significant fire season in CA, time will tell… The real question is to all of our communities and elected officials who represent them will you be prepared. I will again post this video of what wildland fires are capable of and what first responders are up against. The time for reform was five years ago, yet we are still struggling to move the needle to adapt to our surroundings. We can move the needle but we need legitimate allocation of funding and cost share, collaboration and grit amongst stakeholders alike. Let’s get to work…
