Here’s a reminder to support your local farms and businesses, head to your nearest farmers market! There are so many benefits to shopping at your local farmers market. Because the produce at farmers markets is kept local, farmers are able to allow fruits and vegetables to ripen before they are picked. This is what makes local produce so tasty and fresh! Shopping local gives transparency to where your food and products come from, how your food is grown and how your products are made, and when your food was harvested or your products were created. It also puts more of the money you spend right back into the community! Many farmers markets offer so much more than just produce. Some of our favorite products to get at our local farmers market include sourdough bread, chocolate espresso donuts, honey, kettle and caramel corn, strawberries, whatever veggies are ripe at the time, and even clothing! ( I did indeed get this shirt from the farmers market last week 😄 ) Support your community and go check out a farmers market near you!

We've been getting to work out in #Ward8! As many of you know, we don't address food deserts because we know that food access is a man-made problem with plenty of man-made solutions available for those who care to fix it. Although Ward 8 has the highest number of #farmers in #ChocolateCity, it is still considered the hardest hit by what we call #FoodApartheid. Since the two wards #EastOfTheRiver can only access produce at two big box stores, #DreamingOutLoud is building a market in #HistoricAnacostia! The significance of building something at the intersection of #MLK and #MarionBarry is not lost on us, but knowing that we will be able to give more market access to #BlackFarmers and #BlackBusinessOwners in the region while giving our community a chance to buy #LocallyGrown organic produce is an honor and a privilege that we don't take lightly. Tell your friends and follow this journey with us all the way to the grand opening!! #LinkInBio #FreshFood #FoodJustice #BlackOwned #HealthIsWealth #HealthyEating #GrowYourOwn #FoodIsMedicine #SmallBusiness #LocallySourced

The Why? As a left hander I have always loved the part of educating myself and learning the basics to understand the story and rework it in simple words. #foodforthought is my way of working the basics on questions and reminding that you are one in 7.9 billion, Unique and should define how balanced and healthy is the best version of you. Industrialisation of food, ready for market and long shelf life means all food grains, oils, sugar, livestock are highly processed and we need transparency and tracebility . We are OK with losing fibre in rice as we polish it and 92% of wheat is a weed, the basic carbs compromised. As the world gets smaller a look at your eating choices, understand local heritage #eatlocal . Insy Chengappa thank you for your patience, the lights camera action bit ..took 3 years. Need your comments and ideas of where we need more thought on food ..your whys explained. #gutbiome #futureoffood #chefbobbykapoor #cartalyst #lookandcookstudio

King Prawns, Charcuterie, Paella. Another day, another Marks & Spencer’s dumpster from the UK. New source & new location: Are we not starting to get a glimpse of what’s happening behind the scenes at UK supermarkets’ dumpsters? If a successful… …. high quality company like Marks & Spencer’s is dumping out food like this on a daily, imagine what is being dumped in the other UK companies’ dumpsters? This is just the surface of one dumpster. There were likely multiple with all contents likely being sent to the government-subsidised Anaerobic Digestion industry. The subsidy is 750 million GBP per year. Surely that’s a government saving to help plug Rachel Reeves’ 22 billion GBP “black hole”? For me, it’s the prawns that are most painful to witness. Prawn fisheries have some of the highest bycatch on the planet, sometimes there is 7 kilograms of bycatch of other species to catch just 1 kilogram of prawns! This summer, in order to reign in supermarkets’ malpractices, the Australian government has transitioned from a voluntary code of conduct to a mandatory code of conduct. If found to have breached regulations, Australian retailers can now be fined billions of dollars a year by the Australian government. Can we really expect powerful companies to voluntarily “do good” & self-regulate especially when competing against other ruthless companies? Big thanks for this anonymous food waste campaigner for sharing their work & lifting a lid on what’s happening out there. #foodwaste
