It was great to attend the ICE’s Apprenticeship Conference on 8 November. We could only attend virtually this time, but it was an excellent event again. Thanks to the ICE and Richard Davis for arranging it all. Aside from the inspiring presentations by the 4 apprentices invited to speak, one of the biggest takeaways for us was the update that followed on the new Level 6 Integrated Apprenticeships that are due to launch in 2025. These will require apprentices to complete their degree as usual (with some modifications to the current non-integrated degrees) but an apprentice will not be awarded their degree until they have undertaken their End Point Assessment, as the EPA will form part of the degree. This change lead to some lively discussions on the proposed changes, not least how can an apprentice sit their IEng EPA before they formally have a degree, and the potential need for universities to source mentors to support the apprentices on their EPA journey towards completing the ICE’s IEng level attributes. IFATE have not released the new apprenticeship yet but the HE sector as the Training Providers are already planning for the changes. It will be interesting to see how much of the mentoring support to apprentices the employers have to provide.

As an Apprentice Site Manager with B+K and currently pursuing a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management, Ellie’s journey began with a T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning at Cirencester College. For Ellie, choosing a T-Level was a no-brainer, especially as it provided the perfect balance of practical and classroom learning. Here’s why Ellie’s story is a perfect example of the benefits T-Levels can offer: ➡️ Hands-on experience Ellie loved the work placement opportunities that allowed her to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Her time on site helped her gain practical skills like using surveying equipment and attending meetings, essential experience for her role as an apprentice site manager. ➡️ Industry-specific knowledge T-Levels are designed to provide a deep dive into industry sectors. Ellie’s course covered everything from material properties and surveying to technical drawing. It gave her a strong foundation in the construction industry and introduced her to different career paths, helping her find her passion. ➡️ Personal growth and confidence As a young woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Ellie faced challenges but has been met with strong support from her colleagues at every site. The mix of T-Level training and hands on experience built her confidence and helped her navigate these challenges with resilience. ➡️ Career pathways Beyond technical skills, T-Levels helped Ellie develop critical employability skills like CV writing and interview techniques, which helped her secure placements and career opportunities. ➡️ Future ambitions Ellie is aiming high. After completing her degree, she plans to progress to Assistant Site Manager, eventually working her way up to Project Manager. T-Levels gave her the foundation to build a long-term career, and she’s already on the path to success. Ellie’s advice for anyone considering a T-Level: “I would choose a T-level again 100%. If you’re sure about the career you want to pursue, it’s a brilliant option. Do your research, know what you enjoy, and look into the future career opportunities.” Ellie’s story is a shining example of how T-Levels can equip students with both the practical skills and industry insights to thrive in their chosen careers. The week was busy but full of variety, they sat down with a number of BG experts, visited a site, got to use our software to use on their own project and then pitched that project to staff. If you’re looking at starting a career in construction, first of all— smart choice! Construction jobs are always in demand, and a career in the trades is lucrative and fulfilling. I majored in Construction Engineering at Montana State University, and have spent the past 28 years with Dick Anderson Construction. It’s been an incredible experience, and I wouldn’t change anything. Well, I would change some things… Here’s what I would tell my younger self, and anyone looking to get into construction today: ➡ Build your communication skills. When I first started at DAC, my soft skills were sorely lacking. I remember struggling to write an email and nervously presenting to my peers. My boss used to berate me, in a good way, critiquing my writing and presenting. Unfortunately, it’s not something that’s emphasized in a lot of engineering programs. I was tired of being critiqued by my boss, so I signed up for Toastmasters. It’s a 6 AM coffee with people you don’t know, and you have to speak for two minutes about a given topic in front of everyone. There are also three main presentations a year. It was a great place to get more public speaking experience in a friendly environment—and after a few years, I finally felt comfortable presenting to clients and owners. Whether you take comms classes in college, or do a program like Toastmasters, find a way to bolster your communication skills and it will serve you well! ➡ Get hands-on experience through an apprenticeship or internship program. Seek out as much formal on-the-job training as you can. You can do this through internships, summer jobs, and apprenticeship programs. Whether you’re a carpenter, electrician, or plumber, finding an apprenticeship program will equip you with the skills to be successful. At DAC, we’re proud to offer a robust apprenticeship program.
