"What we would like is a treaty that has some teeth," Unilever CEO Hein Schumacher said in an interview with Reuters on Monday. "From the very beginning we have said we prefer binding rules because we feel that it leads to a level playing field for business." One U.N. negotiating session, planned in November in Busan, South Korea, remains before the end-of-year deadline to ink an agreement. In Bangkok in August, member countries heard from specialists on plastics pollution, said Inger Andersen, the executive director of the UN Environment Programme. "It's entirely within member states' ability to do it by the end of the year," Andersen said. "The ball is in their court." -------- Read the full article at: https://lnkd.in/gWQ6hJgD Explore our ambition for the treaty ahead of INC-5 at: https://lnkd.in/ePmWmmS7 #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules #PlasticsTreaty #INC5 #Biz4PlasticsTreaty

The United States, one of the world's biggest plastic makers, will support a #globaltreaty calling for a #reduction in how much new #plastic is produced each year in a major policy shift, a source close to U.S. negotiators told Reuters on Wednesday. The change away from its earlier calls to leave such decisions up to each country puts the U.S. in direct opposition to countries like Saudi Arabia and China. Those countries have argued that the hoped-for United Nations treaty, which negotiators are scheduled to conclude at a November summit in Busan, South Korea, should ignore questions of #production and focus on #downstream measures, such as encouraging #recycling and changing #packaging design. The Busan talks will take place after the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5, in which Vice President Kamala Harris is up against former president Donald Trump. The U.S. now also supports working to create a possible global list of #chemicals that should be phased out to avoid a "patchwork" of different national requirements, as well as set global criteria to identify what should be on a list of "#avoidable plastic products" to phase out, the source said. This is a crucial development. This change would align the US with EU member states, and other countries like Canada and South Korea marking a reversal on the government’s stance toward the UN Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, for which it has so far opposed the “High Ambition Coalition” countries, who advocate for blanket rules limiting industrial production. This could mark the opportunity for the USA plastics industry to accelerate its role in closing the loop on the plastic products made in USA and create new jobs and reduce the waste to landfill. The American Chemistry Council (ACC) may wish to keep business as usual happening however this actually risks the future of the plastics industry as it ignores the concerns of people globally about the end of life of plastics. Without responsible leadership and positive actions addressing the global concerns, plastics will continue to be displaced by other materials. This is an opportunity to establish a new vision for the plastics industry and win respect for positive benefits that plastics deliver while reducing the impact of plastics on the planet and everything that lives on it. https://lnkd.in/ezQPBNem

**Huge news for the UN Plastic Treaty!** According to Reuters, the US has reversed its stance and will now "support a global treaty calling for a reduction in how much new plastic is produced each year." If true (it's yet to be directly confirmed from the White House), this will align the US with the many "high-ambition" countries supporting a binding and expansive global plastics treaty at INC-5 negotiations in Busan, Korea in November. There's still a lot of work to be done, but this is a hopeful sign for a treaty that can create meaningful and necessary change. The U.S. has shifted its stance and now supports a global treaty aimed at reducing plastic production, moving away from its previous position of leaving it to individual countries. This change comes ahead of the final negotiations in South Korea this November. The U.S. will also back creating a global list of harmful chemicals to phase out. This move aligns it with high ambition countries like the EU, South Korea, and Canada, but contrasts with the positions of Saudi Arabia and China, who focus on recycling and packaging design rather than production caps. #PlasticPollution #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #GlobalTreaty #EnvironmentalPolicy

Huge news from USA - finally they are backing 2 very significant goals of the UN Plastics Treaty. 1. Backing the capping plastic production (actually starting to #turnofftheplastictap) 2. Backing the creation of a full list of chemicals of concern for human health impact. These may sound like well, FFS, why weren’t US negotiators already pushing for such irrefutably sensible Treaty goals if we are to make any dent in the plastics crisis. Reality is, it’s a significant shift in approach and goes against Saudi, China and many petrochemical producing countries who want to simply focus on WASTE - so they can keep pumping it out at the tap. Congrats to everyone who has pushed so hard for this. Countless people from health science, environmental law, ocean air and soil protection and all the many NGOs that tirelessly toil for a cleaner, fairer world for all.

🌍 The road to a global plastics treaty is proving challenging! As the latest negotiations in Ottawa reveal, countries are deeply divided over imposing production limits on plastics. 🚫🏭 With plastic production projected to triple by 2050, the stakes couldn't be higher. Rwanda, Peru, and the EU are advocating for ambitious measures, while major petrochemical producers like Saudi Arabia and China push back, favouring less contentious issues. 🤔💬 This impasse highlights the complex balance between environmental goals and industrial interests. What's your take on this standoff? Should there be a cap on plastic production?
