Do Princess Leia and Sherlock Holmes exist? It's not immediately obvious what relevance a question like this has for data governance. However, in his next Insight Article, our Head of Data Ethics, Dr. Alex McKeown explains why, far from being purely abstract or theoretical, with none or only limited practical relevance, formal training in philosophy is a vital tool for ensuring optimally robust data governance. Walking us through several examples, Alex demonstrates how skills in what might broadly be described as ‘philosophical analysis’ can improve the design of data governance policies, ensuring that legal risks can be mitigated or avoided, and helping organisations to design and implement processes that are comprehensive, trustworthy, and responsible. https://lnkd.in/eipUDvmV

Have you encountered instances where data influences your decisions without your knowledge? Data is omnipresent: from the moment we unlock our phones to navigating online platforms, it shapes our interactions and experiences. The growing reliance on data underscores numerous ethical considerations, spanning from personal privacy to global data governance. Issues such as data access, sovereignty, and the emergence of data feudalism demand broad, open, and inclusive discussions. That’s where The Ethical Data Initiative (EDI) comes in. It was launched as a joint effort between the University of Exeter and the TUM Think Tank (Hochschule für Politik München and the Technical University of Munich). Designed as a neutral platform, the Initiative serves as a hub for multilateral conversations surrounding data ethics, ICT, and data governance. Our mission is clear: to tackle significant issues such as data literacy, transparency, and trust building within data ecosystems. The recent EDI Kick-Off workshop highlighted the urgency of collaborative action on shaping ethical data practices. Key takeaways include the importance of inclusive participation from various sectors and communities, the need for holistic approaches and interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. Data are not neutral. Analysis isn't either. Kudos to Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) for embarking on a journey to develop a health data ethics framework to guide their work. The draft is based on the principles shown in the graphic below. It goes far beyond traditional privacy considerations. Feedback on the draft is invited by the end of January.
