I was really pleased to see some of the recommendations I was strongly advocating at the Democratic Business Summit earlier this month included in the summary findings. While I endorse most of them, the ones that most excite me having explored the success of worker buyouts in other countries and how to increase the use of Co-operative Societies for worker buyouts in the UK are : *Explore the potential to follow the success of Italy’s Marcora Law which provides Corporate Tax relief on profits that are paid into a development fund *Set up a review of the potential tax advantages for democratic businesses, including extending the eligibility of current tax reliefs for the EOT model – such as capital gains tax and employee bonus relief – to co-operatives #coops #workercoops #employeeownership
Just a few weeks after the Democratic Business Summit in Cardiff, I'm excited to share the summary findings and recommendations from the conference on how we might work together as a transformative business movement towards 'doubling the size of the co-op and mutual economy' over the next 5-10 years! https://lnkd.in/eZT6raHW Centre for Democratic Business Suzanne Orchard Daniel Stanley Rich Mason Kosta Juri Tej Gonza Alice Hemming Jo White Dave Boyle Glenn Bowen Bethan Webber David Alcock Cliff Mills Tim Coomer Sophie Brownlee Nathan Brown Simon Borkin Scott Darraugh Lucy Humphrey Petra Morris Mathew Lawrence Jonathan Downs Jonathan Nunn Simon Grove-White Steven Lovell Anaïs Bozetine Grace Harrison

Thanks Tom Grever for your excellent help on the MECC agenda and for linking the regional American College of Environmental Lawyers (ACOEL) with our Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference. Your ACOEL panel addressing water quantity issues and the legal and practical ramifications is a perfect and quite timely topic for Region 7 — since we straddle the border between water richness and rapidly declining reserves to the west.

What is the political and funding context think tanks are contending with? What are their biggest challenges? And what do they need to thrive? Each year we capture data from think tanks worldwide to get a sector snapshot. I became a federal employee as a teenager, and stayed one until I retired. The private sector was mysterious to me. Perhaps the single best piece of career advice I got for solving that mystery: Call Adam S. Lee. I knew Adam from his time as a Special Agent in Charge in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). I was the local counterpart ATF SAC. Even back then, Adam was a guy who went out of his way to be a great partner, even when he didn’t have to be. His move into the private sector did not change that about him. Adam, now Chief Security Officer for Dominion Energy, could not have been more gracious. He candidly shared his insights, warned me of pitfalls, and offered practical advice for navigating the transition from public service to corporate America. But he did more than just talk. He introduced me to Donald Upson. The depth of Don’s understanding of the intersection of the public and private sectors is impressive. Don had a vision for strengthening the connection between the two that lead him to co-found the Government Business Executive Forum (GBEF). Like Adam, Don did more than just offer insight and advice. He invited me to speak about the future of law enforcement technology at a GBEF event (held at the French Embassy, no less!). (You can see it here: https://lnkd.in/gu5Dzg7W.) Then he invited me to speak at GBEF’s flagship “EDGE” conference about collaborating across jurisdictional boundaries. (You can see that here: https://lnkd.in/gJytDuvj.) That was years ago. Now I’m well into a successful “Chapter 2.” I was together again with Adam and Don this weekend at EDGE25. I still love going to the conference but now I attend on behalf of SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter). It’s mission fits perfectly because, as always, the program highlights innovative, cutting-edge public safety and security technology. It hosts influential thought leadership. There is abundant relevant policy discussion on timely and topical issues. And there is the networking. The connections I have made through GBEF are too numerous to name—I’d exhaust LinkedIn’s character limit trying. But they have been productive, lucrative, and enjoyable. (I also appreciate that there is always an unmistakable thread of patriotism woven through the program.) And it doesn’t hurt that the conference is my favorite city. https://lnkd.in/gdHSeUgH If you’ve never heard of GBEF or EDGE before, I hope this post was helpful. But mostly I wrote it to say thanks to two great guys who do more than talk.
