Roundtable: Business and the Future of Democracy 24 September 17:00 - 19:00 Q-Club Berlin / Friedrichstraße 181, 10117 Berlin In person The Hertie School extends an invitation for a Roundtable on “Business and the Future of Democracy“ as part of the REBALANCE Project. The event focuses on how business can contribute to strengthening democracy. The growth of anti-democratic sentiments and agendas in different parts of the world, including in Western societies, has been one of the hallmarks and concerns of our time. This concern is heightened in a year in which almost half of the world’s population will elect new leaders, including Europe and Germany. By convening a diverse range of stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, corporations, policymakers and academics, the Roundtable seeks to foster dialogue and explore actionable strategies, reinforcing the need of EU businesses to stand up and lead toward a more democratic world. The Roundtable will offer insights on how ‘democracy-conforming capitalism’ is realized in business practice and explore key themes such as the challenges faced by business when democracies erode and the roles of businesses and entrepreneurs and policymakers in strengthening democracy. The evening will feature input by select speakers, providing impactful perspectives from each of their unique positions in the field. Preliminary programm: Rebalance introduction Panel discussion: What is the role of business, what can be done? Discussion and Engagement with the audience Conclusion: How Rebalance and the discussions need to be connected Aperitif and networking To register please follow this link: https://lnkd.in/ekKiZxZk

“…one of the reasons for the apparent conservatism of institutional investors can be traced back to unclear regulations set by the Financial Conduct Authority… it may be worth further clarifying what is and is not permissible in their eyes.” Stamp duty on share trading is “highly distortive, affecting decisions about share turnover, suppressing share prices, and biassing investors against UK-listed equities at a moment when we need the exact opposite – something that also biases entrepreneurs against listing in, or indeed setting up in the UK.” Good sense and good suggestions on show in this first report from the Private Business Commission in which I am pleased to play a part as one of 11 commissioners. Why The Quoted Companies Alliance and a Private Business Commission? Because the public markets are a natural destination for thriving growth companies - and the sooner the better if the UK can get the conditions right. Thanks to Philip Salter Steve Rigby Eamonn Ives The Entrepreneurs Network and colleagues for their thoughtfulness. #growthcapital #ukeconomy #midcaps #smallcaps #investment #incentives #ipo #transparency #sharetrading #publicequity
🚨📖 NEW: Today we launch our latest report – Backing Breakthrough Businesses. 🚨📖 Britain is a great place to start a business. However, our policies incentivise accelerating to sell, rather than building to last. That’s why we have been falling short when it comes to nurturing new national champions, or keeping promising companies within our shores. With the election just around the corner, now is the time to bolster the business environment for Britain’s Breakthrough Businesses. The Private Business Commission, chaired by Steve Rigby and supported by the Rigby Group plc, was convened to diagnose where Britain’s weaknesses lie, and what to do about them. Its first report, Backing Breakthrough Businesses, comprises months of rigorous research and engagement with our panel of Commissioners and other investors, policy experts and business leaders. We hope that it can be a guide for whoever forms the next government in backing our #BreakthroughBusinesses. You can read it now via the link in the comments. Thanks to all who responded to our Call for Evidence and our commissioners: Chris Hulatt, Sam Smith, Janine Hirt, Irene Graham OBE, Philip Salter, Sam Dumitriu, Valentina Kristensen, Toby Orr, Jan Zeber, Jonny Clark, James Ashton.

Today, at our final Business Matters event for 2024, we set the roadmap for the state’s business community to build an enduring economic legacy in the lead up to, and beyond, the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We heard from Australian Sports Commission CEO, Kieren Perkins OAM and URBIS Director Kate Meyrick on the power of partnerships in driving economic opportunities associated with the 2032 Games on the panel moderated by the ABC's Ellen Fanning. Key takeaways: ✅ We shouldn't be afraid of saying we want to win - both in the arena and economically - and approaching the Games with a competitive mindset from the outset is essential. ✅We have an eight-year window to establish partnerships, build capability and mobilise workforces to deliver early impact and an enduring legacy. Now is the time to seize this opportunity. ✅When we are fragmented, it's significantly harder to achieve the outcomes we want - government, industry, business and the community need to work together. With thanks to everyone who joined us for today's Business Matters, sponsored by Australian Retirement Trust. We're so pleased to partner with ART again in 2025 to deliver the next Business Matters event series. We'll see you there! The Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) is proud to share that our CEO, Natalie Madeira Cofield, recently spoke in Miami on the critical topic of federal government contracting and its impact on driving business growth for rural and urban entrepreneurs. During her remarks, Natalie addressed the recent executive orders issued by President Trump—Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity and Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing—and their potential implications for businesses seeking federal contracts. These policy changes signal a significant shift in federal procurement processes, while eliminating traditional DEI frameworks. As the nation navigates these changes, Natalie underscored the importance of preparing entrepreneurs to adapt and thrive in this evolving landscape. Her expertise and leadership continue to ensure that all small businesses remain empowered to access the tools, resources, and opportunities needed for sustainable success. AEO remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for inclusive economic opportunity and equipping entrepreneurs with the knowledge to navigate shifting policies. #SmallBusiness #EconomicPolicy #GovernmentContracting #Entrepreneurship #Leadership #AEOImpact #PolicyChange
