Since 2018, Business Roundtable has consistently called for a federal consumer data privacy law that will protect and empower consumers and provide clear obligations for how companies handle personal data. However, the current draft of the American Privacy Rights Act (APRA) falls short of creating the uniform national privacy standard intended. Business Roundtable joins #UnitedforPrivacy partners in urging Congress to revise APRA to ensure that the bill provides a strong federal privacy law that enhances consumer privacy protections while preserving the ability for American businesses to compete. BRT is committed to engaging constructively with Congress to ensure that the bill provides a uniform national privacy standard with clear, consistent requirements to strengthen consumer trust and enable new services and technologies to flourish within a well understood legal and regulatory structure. The American Privacy Rights Act will add to the privacy patchwork, confuse consumers, and slow economic growth. Today, TechNet joined 21 other #UnitedforPrivacy partners in a letter urging Congress to make substantial changes to the bill. Read our letter: https://bit.ly/3xiMm4D Since 2018, 46 states have considered 210 comprehensive data privacy bills, with 20 state legislatures passing privacy laws. If this continues, a 50-state patchwork would cost the U.S. economy more than $1 trillion over 10 years, with $200 billion being paid by small businesses. United for Privacy partners agree with the America Privacy Rights Act’s goal of providing a uniform national standard. However, as drafted, the bill falls short and would not end the growing privacy patchwork; it would add to it.
