Data Mesh vs. Data Lakehouse: The Great Data Architecture Debate The way we organize and manage data is constantly evolving. Two hot topics vying for attention are Data Mesh and Data Lakehouse. Data Mesh: This decentralized approach empowers domain-specific teams to own and manage their data. It fosters agility and data quality, but can introduce complexity Data Lakehouse: This hybrid architecture combines the flexibility of a data lake with the structure of a data warehouse. It offers unified access to all data, but requires careful design to avoid becoming a data swamp The question becomes: Which is right for you? There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but consider these factors: 1. Data governance needs: Data Mesh emphasizes ownership, while Data Lakehouse offers centralized control. 2. Data complexity: Data Mesh works well for siloed data, while Data Lakehouse shines for complex, interrelated data sets. 3. Team structure: Data Mesh empowers domain teams, while Data Lakehouse may require a central data engineering team. #dataengineering #data

Feel the "Meta" Data - Business Goals Drive Data Management (30 May at 16:00 SAST). As data professionals, our studies may not have fully prepared us for the intricacies of business domains. However, this is not a barrier, but a unique opportunity for us to take charge of our learning journey. By dedicating time to learning, listening, and understanding the domain, we can significantly enhance our effectiveness in our roles and careers. Let's adopt a 'language first' approach. Just as you need to comprehend and speak a language before you can effectively communicate, as data professionals, we must first grasp the business domain before we can start constructing. This approach not only provides a clear path but also instills confidence in our learning journey. The same is true for Enterprise Business Architecture; before you can start connecting and aligning your Data Architecture to Business Architecture, it's crucial to learn, understand, and recognise the core elements of Business Architecture. This understanding will make you feel secure and knowledgeable about the subject matter. When delving into Business Architecture, the only difference between a business domain and business architecture is Metadata. Therefore, in our journey to understand Business Architecture, it's crucial to listen to and comprehend the Metadata required for business architecture before we start modelling. My go-to approach for feeling the data and Metadata is Business Intelligence, as it forces me to: 1. Find the appropriate data 2. Understand the core concepts 3. Model the core relationships 4. Visualise the resultant model 5. Validate using data I understand and trust 6. Repeat the Cycle The challenges I constantly face: 1. Finding a trusted source 1. Data 2. Domain Knowledge 2. Getting the Concept Relationships correct 1. Resolving Loops, Fan and Chasm Traps 3. Filling the Gaps Today, Modelware Systems will walk through the 'language first' approach to studying the Metadata of Business Architecture.
