Salary packaging an EV. It is a NO BRAINER people. I'm reading so much mis-information on the benefits of packaging an EV. And even more mis-information of the pros and cons of owning an EV. EVs are EXEMPT from FBT. This means that all of your car costs (even the lease payments) are taken out of pre tax salary. So you save over $10k in tax a year. On top of this massive benefit, you also get the GST paid on the car and all expenses back. Salary packaging an EV is a no brainer. The bigger issue is finding a reputable salary packaging business to help you package your car and thats easy - I can put you in touch with people I know and trust. (Be careful not to use a dodgy company that tries to rip you off - MAXXIA was found charging 17% interest rate for some govt employees). If you need a new car and you want to save some serious $$$ then ask your employer if you can salary package a car. A Salary Sacrifice scheme could help your employees make the switch to electric cars. It's a valuable staff benefit that's easy to run for no extra cost.   This is how it works: 1. An employee leases a brand new electric car through the scheme. 2. The employee exchanges salary for lease payments. 3. Instead of paying income tax on the sacrificed salary, the employee pays a low Benefit in Kind (BiK) rate of tax.   To encourage the use of electric cars, the Government has set a low rate of BiK tax on zero emission cars. Do you pay car allowances?? Do you receive a car allowance? Car allowance is a payment made by employers to employees to cover the cost of using / insuring / maintaining their personal vehicle for work related purposes. It's an increase in salary and is taxable too. Putting aside the tax payable and money lost by BOTH employers and employees to pay car allowances to staff, car allowance also brings about a different issue - GREY FLEET!! What's that you ask!?
