How can the EU raise its game on artificial intelligence (AI)? How can AI make workplaces more productive and engaging? These were key questions discussed at our workshop on AI at Work and Algorithmic Management on 28 January. Roxana Minzatu, European Commission Executive Vice-President for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Jobs and Preparedness, highlighted that algorithms in the workplace can boost efficiency but also raise risks, be subject to bias, lack transparency, or undermine workers’ trust. Therefore, “we must ensure AI is ethical and human-centric, especially when AI is used to manage people”. Our Director General, Markus J. Beyrer, spoke about the transformative potential of AI: “AI can boost competitiveness, productivity, innovation, scientific progress, the green transition, and improvements in working conditions.” He underscored the urgency of investment, legal certainty, better public-private partnerships and training and education to unlock AI’s full potential - especially given Europe’s labour and skills shortages. Mikael Vetterskog, CEO of Fårbo Mekaniska, shared his company’s experience with AI. He noted that while there was a learning curve, implementing AI in areas such as production processes, administration, and certification applications led to increased productivity and greater job satisfaction for workers at his company. A big thank you to all our speakers and the industry experts who participated in the World Café session, sharing hands-on examples of AI in action. Your insights made this event a success!

Most people are not very familiar with the concept of artificial intelligence (AI). As an illustration, when 1,500 senior business leaders in the United States in 2017 were asked about AI, only 17 percent said they were familiar with it. A number of them were not sure what it was or how it would affect their particular companies. They understood there was considerable potential for altering business processes, but were not clear how AI could be deployed within their own organizations. Despite its widespread lack of familiarity, AI is a technology that is transforming every walk of life. It is a wide-ranging tool that enables people to rethink how we integrate information, analyze data, and use the resulting insights to improve decisionmaking. Our hope through this comprehensive overview is to explain AI to an audience of policymakers, opinion leaders, and interested observers, and demonstrate how AI already is altering the world and raising important questions for society, the economy, and governance. #snsinstitutions #designthinking #snsdesignthinkers

Martin Neil Baily and Aidan Kane’s commentary published online entitled “How will AI affect productivity?” May 2, 2024, is brilliant reading and I highly recommend it. It can be found at https://lnkd.in/gX6bcAHq Please note that the text and charts are © The Brookings Institution, 2024. All Rights Reserved. Their work addresses four very important and pressing issues when it comes to AI today. They include: 1. What is productivity and how do we measure it? 2. Why has productivity growth been so slow? 3. Will AI improve productivity? 4. How can policy affect AI’s impact on the labor market? Additional studies on related topics can be found at the Economic Studies Media Office of Brookings. esmedia@brookings.edu I found their work fascinating and thorough. I am only going to present their findings and some quick comments with regards to question #3 above. In their explainer, they “look at what we know about the prospects of artificial intelligence (AI) for the workforce, businesses, and the overall economy. Could this technology power future growth through improved productivity?”

Today, we’re proud to launch our research, "From Human to Hybrid: AI and the Future of the Frontline", a collaboration between Target Global and JLP.. As an investor deeply passionate about the transformative potential of AI, my partners and I have spent the past couple of years refining our broader thesis on how AI can reshape society at large. At the core of this work is the belief that AI has the power to dramatically improve public services. To begin this exploration, we focused on one of the most critical groups—frontline workers. Teachers, nurses, and police officers face immense pressure, and we believe AI can help alleviate some of their burdens, enabling them to focus on what matters most: serving the public. Through in-depth conversations with these workers across the UK, we’ve identified key barriers to AI adoption and uncovered its potential to save up to £200 billion for the UK public sector. While this is just the beginning of our journey, the insights we’ve gathered so far point to the need for smarter AI solutions, better training, and closer collaboration between AI developers and frontline professionals. I encourage you to read our report and join the conversation. Your insights and thoughts are invaluable to us as we continue to look at AI’s broader potential and how it can empower people, transform industries, and improve lives: https://lnkd.in/dGvYAsEX

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗜? In his recent essay "𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲," Dario Amodei reflects on the potential positive impacts of AI in the near future. After hearing so much about the potential dire consequences of AI in recent months, it's refreshing to consider the possibility that AI could lead to huge strides in areas like: Health, Neuroscience, Economic development, Poverty reduction, and Peace and security. However, one area that Anthropic's CEO acknowledges as more complex is "𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴". Specifically, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀? Amodi suggests that, in the short term, AI won’t completely replace human jobs. He explains: "𝘈𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘈𝘐 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘵 90% 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘫𝘰𝘣, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 10% 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥, 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥, 𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵, 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘫𝘰𝘣𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘈𝘐 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘢𝘵. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 '10%' 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦." Humans will also retain an absolute comparative advantage in the physical world. Furthermore, Amodi believes that meaning is found in human relationships, personal growth, and connection—rather than solely in economic labor—so we won’t be languishing in aimless boredom just yet. That said, the long-term implications are much harder to predict. As we approach the development of General AI, and with greater access and reduced costs, traditional capitalism may no longer function. A new model of capitalism—or something entirely different—will be required. If Dario's vision of an optimistic future holds true, we might not be facing mass joblessness or economic disaster after all. However, I believe that every knowledge worker reading this should start thinking about how to leverage AI in their work and life. Start practicing with generative AI tools and consider this: ❓ 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲❓ Do you agree with Dario’s assessment? How are you preparing for the widespread impact of AI in the workplace?

Will AI slowly kill your business? Some excerpts from an interesting read. The unknown side-effects of AI use at work.... "...in the fervour to keep pace with competitors and reap the efficiency gains associated with deploying AI, many organizations have lost sight of their most important asset — the humans whose jobs are being fragmented into tasks that are increasingly becoming automated" Modern organizations are increasingly sensitive to the physical and mental well-being of their employees, and they are going to great lengths to promote both inclusiveness and social connection. This is good business: Research shows that when people feel a strong connection with others at work, they will consider the interests of the organization as important to their own interests. Indeed, such studies consistently show that employees who feel socially connected and emotionally fulfilled at work are more engaged, productive, and committed to their organizations. They’re more likely to collaborate, innovate, and go above and beyond in their roles. but on a deeper level, it (AI) may erode the very foundation of those relationships — the sense of authentic, shared humanity that underpins true connection and collaboration and as a result undermine their mental and physical health. no matter how advanced or sophisticated these AI tools become, they are common, substitutable, and imitable and thus not a strategic asset that will make the difference for a company and gain them a sustainable competitive advantage over their competitors. This can only be achieved if the human resources are taken care of when AI enters the work equation, so they are not disengaged and demoralized. https://lnkd.in/eZQFuTBr #AI #work

From Knowledge Work to Perceptual Work Ensuring human value in the face of AI I have shared before some thoughts on how AI will disrupt our concept of knowledge work- but this topic deserves even further reflection. Indeed, "The New Knowledge Work" is the discussion at the upcoming Global Peter Drucker Forum. The easiest thing to grasp about AI is that as it becomes smarter, we too shall have to reconsider what we value as smart. Right now, organizations (and society) value logic and reason (left-hemisphere characteristics) over more creative capabilities that may take longer to show ROI. As AI makes more decisions and gets "smarter" in the ways of organizational outcomes, our human capacities for productivity and contribution will be reformulated. I call this the evolution: From Knowledge Work to Perceptual Work. Perceptual work is defined as the ability to generate novel observations and solutions through an increased range of sensitive perception. This transition means having the ability to move from knowledge work (someone whose job requires them to think for a living) to perceptual work by increasing awareness through honing the acts of noticing and questioning. These skills will be paramount if we are to build perceptual workers — those individuals who can collectively manage situations, adaptively respond to novel environments, and thrive alongside AI. Enclosed is an article (from part of a book project) for those interested in a deep dive. https://lnkd.in/ei6FFkXk #PerceptualShift, #HumanValueAI, #FromKnowledgeToPerception, #ReimaginingWork, #DruckerForum2024

🚀 New MIT Insights: Rethinking Human-AI Partnerships 🚀 Recent MIT research challenges the assumption that human-AI collaborations always boost performance. Published in Nature Human Behaviour, the study reveals that while AI shines in decision-making tasks (like diagnostics), human-AI teams often fall short compared to AI alone. Yet, in creative tasks—like generating content or imagery—human-AI teams often excel, blending human insight with AI efficiency. Takeaways for Organizations: • Evaluate Current Systems: Ensure human-AI teams are genuinely outperforming solo efforts. • Leverage Strengths Strategically: Use AI in areas that complement human creativity and intuition. • Set Clear Guardrails: Let AI handle data-heavy work, freeing humans for context-driven tasks. The future isn’t just AI replacing human roles—it’s about unlocking potential through effective collaboration. “Let humans do what they do best,” says co-author Thomas Malone. #HumanAICollaboration #MITResearch #AIInnovation #FutureOfWork #ArtificialIntelligence
