100%—this is all I want to talk about. We must stay focused on the urban core. (And just look to other major US cities to see what happens when you don't.) This is how to curb sprawl and make the most of our civic infrastructure. LIHTC, transit improvements, public education, development incentives, resiliency, etc. should focus on the part of Houston that is ripe with amenities, jobs, and healthcare options. Our highway network is at capacity, and without a regional rail option, it is time to look inward. Central Houston (Downtown, Midtown, Medical Center, East End, etc.) has the multimodal options, green spaces (and potential for even more passive cooling improvements), access to the medical center, jobs, and sure, we need more HISD options and another HEB, but we aren't far off from the ideal combo of infrastructure and amenities. Just look at the room to grow on the Kinder Institute for Urban Research's Taking Stock project page—nothing but space for more, dense housing: https://lnkd.in/gx6CxWSC
Don’t confuse Houston with the Houston Region. For decades, the City’s share of the regional population has been dropping. Houston needs to bring these people into the urban core. That requires better schools, safer mobility, more affordable and walkable neighborhoods. https://lnkd.in/gA98Q8bR

Buffalo and the Broader Struggles of Great Lakes Cities: Economic Growth with Deep Inequities As Mayor Byron Brown’s 19-year tenure in Buffalo comes to a close, the city has experienced significant transformation, with over $10 billion in economic development, including major projects like Canalside and the Buffalo Medical Campus. Yet, despite these advances, the economic and social challenges facing Black and Latino residents remain daunting. WGRZ’s Nate Benson and data from the Partnership for the Public Good highlight the ongoing disparities: • Poverty: A slight 2.3% decrease leaves child poverty at 36.9%. • Income Inequality: Black households earn only 60% of white households, while Latino residents earn less than 50%. • Homeownership: Black homeownership has barely improved, with a slight decline since 2006, deepening the racial wealth gap. These challenges are not unique to Buffalo. According to the 2024 Index of African American Well-Being, authored by Dr. Marc Levine from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Buffalo reflects the broader struggles faced by cities across the Great Lakes region—like Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Detroit. These cities are grappling with the legacy of deindustrialization, structural inequality, and persistent poverty, particularly within their Black and Latino communities. At Great Lakes Urban Empowerment Solutions (GLUE), we understand that true progress requires more than economic investment; it demands a focus on inclusive growth. By promoting economic mobility, educational equity, affordable housing, and better health outcomes, we aim to address the root causes of these disparities across the Great Lakes region. Buffalo’s challenges are a reminder of the critical need for regional collaboration and community-led solutions to ensure a more equitable and prosperous future for all. #Buffalo #UrbanDevelopment #EconomicEquity #ByronBrown #GreatLakesRegion #GLUE #CommunityEmpowerment Source: Nathan Benson, WGRZ, Partnership for the Public Good Dr. Marc Levine, 2024 Index of African American Well-Being (https://lnkd.in/gJtQ6KpX), University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Philadelphia is currently the 6th most populous city in the U.S., but it is one quarter of Houston’s land area. What If Philadelphia and the surrounding region consolidated into a regional city? This previously happened with the Philadelphia County consolidation (1854), and the best example is New York City combining five separate counties into five boroughs (1898). A combined Philadelphia comprised of Philadelphia, Montgomery and Delaware Counties would be similar in size to Houston, and double the city’s population (3,000,000 residents). https://lnkd.in/gC5HmSRC

It is no secret The Triangle has been one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation since 2020. Much of that growth is coming to the Triangle's booming suburbs and outlying counties, where rapid housing construction and job growth is transforming once-small towns like Apex and Holly Springs into some of the fastest-growing places in the country. Wake County has grown 5.3% since 2020. With 1.2 million residents, it's the state's largest county. But the Triangle's fastest-growing counties were its outer-lying ones: Franklin County, Johnston County and Chatham County. Outside of the Triangle, you might be surprised to find that North Carolina's population is actually growing most significantly along the coast, the mountains and in the Piedmont regions, home to most of its largest cities.
