May the best product win. But first, we need lobbyists! The latest generation of defense tech startups share a common goal: leveling the playing field with incumbents. They should start an industry group to advocate for better regulations to make it easier to buy cheaper, smarter systems that aren't designed for sustainment. New companies shouldn't win because they're new. Old companies shouldn't win because they're old. Unlike startups, these old companies have the budget to lobby. They can hire people to wander around the Pentagon. They have build up the sides of the walled garden that is the Defense Industrial Base. One terrible example of this is attritable, autonomous systems. The cheap drones that require no training, yet can only be effectively countered by systems that cost 100X more. We're on the wrong side of this equation. Who is lobbying for cheap, smart systems? Startups can't afford to do it. And the incumbents aren't going to break their own business model. They make money sustaining exquisite platforms. I hope the best in the field pool their resources. Startups such as Saronic Technologies, Swarmbotics AI, Drooid, Vantage Robotics, and Fortem Technologies should work together. Some of the bigs (SpaceX, Anduril Industries) can help. A rising tide lifts all boats (swarms?). Who's going to start this? #dod #defense #dualuse #venturebacked #defenseinnovation #autonomy #swarms

Helping Technology companies expand across U.S. Defense | High-Impact C-Suite Advisor | Entrepreneur, Operations Officer | Defense Entrepreneurs Forum | AWS | Booz Allen
I think this article provides a great example of “dual use” technology, where the company had good commercial success and traction, and to meet #defense demands, “has to make some product advancements,” though the out-of-the-box product is most of the way there. Notice this company’s maturity… Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is helping us adopt and adapt some more mature capabilities, not just those of startups coming out of Silicon Valley and other innovation hotbeds. So TRLs matter! #nationaldefense #executionmatters #onwards

VC investment in defense tech is on the rise, fueled by the AI boom. Anduril’s $1B round in late 2022 sparked a surge, and despite a funding dip in early 2024, Anduril Industries is now raising another $1.5B at a $12.5B valuation. Other key investments in AI-focused defense startups include True Anomaly’s $100M for space security, Shield AI’s $200M for autonomous fighters, and Gecko Robotics’ $173M for infrastructure. With AI startups gaining traction in defense, could we be on the verge of another explosive tech boom? READ MORE: https://lnkd.in/dTkyhPKq #techbuzz #usa #defense #artificialintelligence #robotics

In 2000s, there were just a few notable startups in defence space. Now, the U.S. has an entire ecosystem of such companies. Traditional defence companies are unable to keep up with the evolving needs of military: 1. Instead of one do-it-all (say) satellite, an array of smaller linked ones might be preferable. This can reduce points of failure and increase chances of a successful mission. 2. Communication networks need to share information quickly so that faster decisions can be made. 3. Tech-enabled solutions to tackle tech-based challenges. But it’s not an easy road for startups: 1. They don’t have access to inside details and thus, don’t understand the specific problems defence faces. And the industry needs straightforward solutions, not out-of-the-box ideas. 2. They're not familiar with the processes of this industry and it’s difficult for them to win contracts. 3. Government entities don’t want to put money into innovation. And by the time programs scale, private investors are already bored. However, the ones disrupting the defence industry are using these strategies: 1. They build systems that can be scaled later. 2. To overcome their lack of experience, they partner with established companies. Existing system coupled with innovative tech creates a win-win solution. 3. They find non-military applications to buy time for defence projects to gain momentum while keeping the private investors happy. 4. They offer hardware and software solutions together. A fleet of drones is more appealing than just a drone operating system. 5. Rather than addressing general needs, they provide precise solutions for specific issues. It’s not just the work of one entity, but the collective efforts of startups, traditional companies, and investors that are transforming modern-day national security. . . I gained these insights from an article recommended in an online community hosted by Pavan Sathiraju where we explore topics like these.
