Rotating Machinery Expert Identifies commercial, technical, and environmentally-friendly solutions in Energy and Oil & Gas
How do you manage growth versus a commitment to reduce your carbon footprint? A tale from Duke Energy. Not all energy sources are created equally and if need gas fired power because alternative energies haven't scaled up yet or are too expensive, there is a way to mitigate that. Is it also more important to reduce your lb CO2/KWH or is it more important tor educe the absolute numbers of tons of CO2 in the atmosphere?
Facing demand increase, Duke Energy seeks to delay its 2030 climate target in North Carolina | Energy News Network

💡 Highlights 💡 from new article ‘How much storage do we need in a fully electrified future?’ by Greg Marsden Elizabeth Shove and me: -Current approaches to estimating future storage needs are challenged. -Greater attention is needed to the temporality and spatiality of demand. -There is a false equivalence between storage and demand side management. -Patterns of demand are changing and matter to what is assumed for storage. -Greater integrations with scenarios of social futures would benefit storage research. https://lnkd.in/e8vfEkpZ Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC)

This partnership aligns with EPRI’s Climate READi (REsilience and ADaptation Initiative), which is focused on adapting the power sector’s capacity to tackle the challenges posed by climate change. EPRI’s initiative aims to provide essential research, tools, and frameworks that enable utilities and energy companies to adapt their infrastructure and operations to future climate risks, ensuring continued delivery of reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy in an evolving environmental landscape. 319Climate’s involvement will concentrate on Technical Working Group 3 (WG3), which emphasizes Resilience and Adaptation Planning and Prioritization, furthering collaborative efforts to focus on climate resilience across the energy sector. Through EPRI’s collective efforts, including contributions from member utilities, government bodies, and industry stakeholders, the initiative aims to strengthen proactive climate risk management in the power sector, encompassing areas like renewable energy, grid modernization, energy storage, and cybersecurity. Senior Advisor to Deputy Assistant Secretary Operations, Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, U.S. Department of Energy (formerly Accenture's Global Energy Transition Services Lead)
I have just watched this CSIS interview and started a new book by John Deutch who reflects on 50 years of energy experience and applies it to our climate challenge. https://lnkd.in/gTDd7Mb4 As an optimistic realist, I believe technology will surprise and come through for us, and I believe in human ingenuity in developing new business models. But I also think one of the biggest challenges is how we manage energy security - at a reasonable cost- as we transform our infrastructures- and deal with the inevitable unforeseen external events (whether be climate or political).

Want to know more about how the U.S. grid is planned and regulated? Joe DeLosa III, Prof. Paul Joskow, and I have summarized it in this new Working Paper by the MIT - Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. The U.S. regulation of the high-voltage transmission grid is highly complex and, as a result, generally poorly understood. Yet, understanding and improving it is critical to planning the grid we need -- one that can reliably and cost-effectively support the rapidly accelerating energy transition.
