The tech talk is cool and all, but we don't see enough entrepreneurs talking about place. Why aren't we having more public discussions for economic development? Is it only enough that we are growing our daily active users? To the entrepreneurs who've built according to the spaces they want to improve, how can we start ongoing discussions about urban design, civic centers, activating corridors, and so on? Where is the depth when it comes to urban metabolism? Do we yet understand that for every input there is an output/exhaust? And where is this exhaust going? I'm calling out my timeline on this one. Let's start having more conversations on how entrepreneurship affects the growth of a city intentionally. Business is the vehicle by which we develop the world. Let's go!

Next Thursday, Boris Mann and I are running a session as part of Vancouver Startup Week discussing why this matters, how to make it happen, and figuring out actions you can take. We’ll be discussing two big questions: 1. How we get smart young people to choose BC? 2. How can you make this We’re excited to see you there. #smartyoungbc

Oh man. We did it again. Another fantastic Denver ETA meetup. Communities in real life matter. All forms of entrepreneurship can be lonely, challenging, and frustrating. In the acquisition space... you combine the challenges of entrepreneurship with the incredibly isolated task of identifying, analyzing, and pursuing a business to acquire. Not here. Not in Denver (or in Baltimore). Connecting people to those with experience, knowledge, resources, or time to share is incredible. Moving forward, the value we create will only grow. Beyond networking, we'll be hosting educational panels... filled with searchers, operators, investors, lenders, lawyers, brokers and more. Why kick the door jam yourself, when you can learn from those who have already broken their toes. To learn is to grow, and that's what we're here for.

There is a true science behind the entrepreneurial journey. The energy required to start, maintain and scale a small business waivers and, at times, feels completely depleted. However, energy is neither created nor destroyed. What business owners are really in search of is MOMENTUM! This is what my friend, Chip Higgins, would call The Bizzics Way. I highly recommend his new book where the principles of physics are applied to help entrepreneurs power their businesses to maximum momentum. In honor of National Small Business Week & Nashville Small Business Week, I am gifting this book to a few amazing entrepreneurs within my network. #NashvilleSmallBusinessWeek #NationalSmallBusinessWeek #TheBizzicsWay #Entrepreneurship
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and fostering vibrant communities. They embody the spirit of entrepreneurship and resilience, facing challenges head-on and making a lasting impact on our world. My motivation to write The Bizzics Way stemmed from witnessing the incredible dedication and passion of small business owners. I wanted to provide a resource that not only celebrates their hard work but also equips them with the tools and insights needed to thrive in today's competitive landscape. Join me in celebrating Small Business Week by supporting your local small businesses and sharing the love! Together, let's champion entrepreneurship and fuel the engine of economic growth.

Did you see me at Inventures 2024? I walked around with a QR code and the caption "No Friends?" to promote my start-up (Jam The Social App), we're hosting niche networking events all summer long in Calgary (Calgary Tech Start-Up Founders upcoming June 20th). Find all our events on myjam.is. Here's one thing I learned from talking with 10 established entrepreneurs at Inventures: "You can't count on luck, but luck counts." I independently networked and chatted with entrepreneurs at Inventures, and I asked them, "How did they become successful and how did they get started in their business?" I was shocked to hear that all of them attributed their level of success to luck. From having a friend who knew a guy who knew a guy all the way to running into an investor at a bank who later funded their start-up. Luck changed their lives. How is it that being in the right place at the right time plays a significant role in running a successful business? While it's hard to grapple with the idea that something completely out of your control can guarantee success or failure, we can walk away knowing that while we can't count on luck, in the business world, luck does count.
