Stray animals day is celebrated every year on 4th of April, to cherish and honour the bond between human beings and stray animals and to showcase compassion towards the ones lost,injured,troubled or abandoned. The day was launched in 2010 when over 100 Dutch organizations convened at the Dutch National Stray Animals Conference. When it comes to animal welfare and their upliftment , the smallest of initiatives and steps have the potential to become big and have a greater impact than we think. To honour this pure connection and foster the core values of human- animal bond, here are 3 steps which each of us should implement: 1. PET: Affection and attention is what these creatures crave for the most. Understand their body language first, maintain your own safety and go ahead and shower them with love. 2. PROTECT: Storms, rain,extreme wind and harsh winters and summers can be a hard time for the strays as they have no roof over their head. Giving them a temporary abode when we witness their discomfort, can be beneficial for them and specially their young ones who might not survive otherwise. 3. PROVIDE: Finding some time to feed and take care of their nourishment, while also knowing what's safe for them and what's not can go a long way to cure the problem of starvation deaths. Providing does not only include food and water, but also first aid and medications on time, to avoid further spread and fatalities. Dogs and Best Friends Animal Society supporters and staff filled the Hall of Governors Tuesday to celebrate Gov. Spencer Cox declaring 2024 as no-kill shelter year in Utah. “Whereas, achieving no-kill for all of Utah’s animal shelters is within reach, and would make Utah the largest no-kill state and the first no-kill state in the West,” Cox wrote, “Now, therefore, I, Spencer J. Cox, governor of the state of Utah, do hereby declare 2024 as no-kill shelter year in Utah.” The declaration encourages animal shelters to change policies to save pets’ lives. A no-kill state means that the shelters within the state save the lives of pets they house. According to data from Best Friends, 47 out of 60 shelters across the state are no-kill. So far, 45,538 furry friends have been saved. The total save rate is 87.8%, while 1,700 cats and dogs have been killed.  🐑🐐 Inspiring Change: Fullerton Students Choose Compassion 🌱🌿 I'm thrilled to share a heartwarming story of generosity and bravery from Fullerton Union High's Future Farmers of America (FFA) program. Despite the tradition of raising animals for auction and slaughter, a group of students recently made a revolutionary decision: to spare the lives of two sheep and three goats. This act was spearheaded by a student leader who contacted Farm Sanctuary, leading to Phry and Shawn sheep finding a loving home at the Southern California Shelter, while Pam, Kevin, and Bruce goats now reside at Sage Mountain Sanctuary through our Farm Animal Adoption Network. This isn't the first time Fullerton students chose compassion. In 2015, a student named Bruno made ripples by sending his pig, Lola, to Farm Sanctuary, showing that alternatives to slaughter exist. The decision to rescue these animals was not taken lightly. As a condition for rescuing and caring for them, students must terminate their involvement in FFA's animal husbandry projects. It's important to show that rescue work is more than just a safety net: it's about discouraging the commodification of animals. These students are setting an important example, proving that enriching experiences within organizations like FFA can exist without harm to animals. By changing traditions, they've given Phry, Shawn, Pam, Kevin, and Bruce a chance at life free from harm. Let's honor these students for their empathy and commitment to change. It could be, and in my opinion it SHOULD be. We must rethink our relationship with animals, with the planet, with each other. Amazing news! DARTCC has received our 2nd consecutive #grant from The Irving and Phyllis Millstein Foundation for Animal Welfare. This Animal-Centered Philanthropy® bestowed a generous $75,000 grant in 2023 and a $40,000 grant this year. This additional grant will help us to continue developing the Emergency Animal Shelter platform (EASApp) in several crucial ways, delivering the following to volunteers and teams: -- An easy-to-understand mobile solution to streamline the care of animals at a disaster shelter. -- A central platform to manage volunteer and team profiles, memorandums of understanding, and shelter data. -- A platform to train, test, and deploy an emergency shelter for animals and document their care. -- Detailed reports and data exports for local, state, and federal requirements “We are deeply grateful for this second grant. Their history and experience combined with constant evaluation of trends in animal welfare and sheltering have made them a necessary and respected asset within the community. As, “A Different Breed of Shelter” they challenge the stereotypes of traditional animal shelters and believe that the, “Quality of the Wait,” can make all the difference in the future of an animal!❤️ The Mission of the Michigan Animal Rescue League is to provide the highest quality of life to dogs and cats through rescue, medical care, socialization and behavioral support, short- and long-term sanctuary, adoption, and community education and outreach. Adjusting to the shelter environment can be hard for dogs and cats. While MARL’s staff and volunteers make every effort to make their temporary home welcoming, the shelter is still often a place where dogs and cats find themselves confined in an unfamiliar environment, separated from their previous families, and exposed to much more noise than they’re used to. This is where MARL’a enrichment program comes in! Enrichment is a term that describes how shelter environments can be adjusted and enhanced to better benefit each animal. The goal of enrichment is to minimize stress levels by adding different kinds of stimulation and activities to each animal’s daily routine.
